Zaphod, where did you come from? I thought you were dead!
I'm experiencing some strange lag, though. For some reason I will sometimes get lag in a cell. Sometimes I won't. It seems to be random and usually restarting the game will get rid of it. I'll update my videocard drivers tomorrow, but I don't think that's going to help...

dkessler, your video card isn't supported by Oblivion. It's not shader 2.0 compliant.
dkessler on 22/3/2006 at 14:59
@ slither
thanks, I found that out as well. Do you of any other way to fix that besides getting a new card which I do not really want to do at this time
thanks in advance for your answer

there is no way to "fix" it. shader model 2.0 just means it is using "pixel shaders" ( type of graphics rendering that renders shadows and textures more realistically ) that require directx 9.0 generation hardware. geforce 4 series is only a directx 8 generation card. since it came out before directx 9 was was released, it doesn't physically have the hardware capable of performing some of the operations, such as SM 2.0, that some directx 9 games require...... including oblivion.
so why does half life 2 and doom 3 work? they are able to detect that you have an older card and render through the directx8 shader path instead of dx9. oblivion doesn't support that. so you will need to get a new graphics card if you're going to play it. sorry :(

How much did the thing cost you?
RarRar on 22/3/2006 at 18:56
I'm getting a LOT of crashes too. About half the time I load a savegame. A few other rare times too. That's a LOT crashes.
BUT ...
I haven't updated my video card drivers yet. So I'm not complaining until I do that at least.

$340. I've found it on Pricewatch for $330, but it was definately worth the extra $10 to get it today.

dkessler, have a read of my post on the other Oblivion thread: (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=104665&page=5)
FX cards are just not up to running Oblivion well. I strongly recommend buying a new card. Even if you're still holding onto an AGP system, a Geforce 6800GS will make the most of it for a fair price (that's what I have in my Athlon 64 3400+ system, Thief DS runs VERY well on this).
