Right now I'm only connected to the net through a 56k, and it took me a lot of self-persuasion to do this, especially after reading through the downfalls of the interface posted by Daxim. Nevertheless, I decided to give it a try, and 12hrs:30mins after I began to download it finished. Trying to even install the thing became a chore, it slowed down the computer, and after about 10 minutes of pacing back and forth in the living room muttering, "Digi said it was good..." I came back and there were maybe 3 install screens open. I closed two and FINALLY got the game installed.
After the Fishtank logo, the screen went blank and before resetting the computer (This is XP, I shouldn't have to reset) I heard voices. "Hmmph, mood movie.. voices and no picture" It displayed the background about the king stuff and moving underground and all that, I saw it all... then it seemed another live action movie came on but the screen went blank. After creating a character and seriously wondering about the movie part, I started.. once again to see black but hear voices. A scroll thing popped on the screen telling me to right click on it for it to go away... it was still black. Realized I was in a jail cell so I figured it made sense... until another scroll thing popped up and said I could interact with people in the world, and the guy told me to try and find a way out FAST... but it was still black. I fiddled with ALL of the settings and I still get this black thing.

I guess I'll just have to pass this great game by, I can't get it running! If I can't run the demo, why waste money on a game I could possibly not like? :mad:
Until I get my Alienware Navigator (Media Center) system next March, I'm stuck with whatever computer is placed in front of me, and currently I'm on my sister's computer. Specs:
Pentium 4 1.70Ghz
128mb SDRAM
16mb ATI RAGE 128 ULTRA
Windows XP Home
Is there any way to get this game running?!

Consider a video card upgrade. Overall the rest of your specs seem more than adequate. But since it's not your computer I understand that you have to make do with what's in it. I don't know what to tell you in that regard. :(

Is this an older demo you've downloaded? I had this exact same problem with one of the older Arx demos released way back with my ATI card. The more recent demo and the retail game works for me.

What kind of ATI were you on though, Baron?
DarkViper on 20/11/2002 at 23:20
Pretty sure it's a newer one. Got all the mirrored links off of a popular gaming site.
Damn this video card.
Guess I'm just stuck till next March. Hopefully at that time I'll be able to borrow a high speed connection off of someone and get it, I'm not spending 12 more hours on a dialup (and downloading on a dialup means every single page takes 30-90 seconds to load, unless it times out).
:idea: Hmmm... then again... I could find a cybercafe and burn it to disc!
Guess I just have to wait *sigh*

I seem to remember that the original drivers for the ATI cards in years past weren't very good. Have you been to the ATI site to see if there is an update?

The first demo had this same problem and could be fixed by adding ATI=1 to de cfg.ini, this won't work with the latter demo.
in the latter demo they renamed the attribute... I'm not sure what its new name is (I think its softfog) but try setting the options in the [MISC] section of the cfg.ini to:
[MISC]
softfog=1
clearnearcorrection=0
forcenoeax=0
forcegdi=0
forcemetaltwopass=0
forcezbias=0
newcontrol=1
For me, these settings fixed all problems...
NOTE: I am using win98 with the most recent ATI drivers.

Your playing the old demo, DarkViper, as the new one doesn't have the FishTank logo but the JoWood one instead.

I have an ATI Mobility M4, the laptop counterpart of the Rage 128.

twisted is right. If you got the fishtank logo your demo is from the ALPHA built of the game. Which means it's a very very very old & buggy one.
All the problems with ATI has been fixed since.
