Yeah I don't know why anyone would pick Bows as a major. They only seem useful to get in free shots before you switch to melee.
Bows are fantastic with a sneak character. When your sneak is high and you're standing in shadows enemies don't see you even -after- you've shot them, which means you can take them down with just 2-4 tripple damage shots. Works very well in combination with magic, as you can just use Touch range Destruction magic if/when they do get near.
You are of course still vulnerable as all hell, and groups can be tricky if there's nowhere to hide. And you need to be really crafty when you can't hide. And, when this happens 2 seconds after you fast-travel to a location...

I am DONE w/you and your crappy Vampire-ness. I have stopped playing that Thief Assassin Marksman I was playing since day 1. Erased. Vampires are WAY too restrictive, and the stealth is fun for a second, but gets tiring.
Dude being a vampire is freaking GREAT. Sooo much better than in Morrowind - the skill and stat boosts and the extra spells (particularly ones you get at more advanced stages of Vampirism) more than make up for not being able to travel during daylight. You can still fast travel, as long as it's at night, and the Vampire Seduction power allows you to still talk to whoever you want without them running away screaming "vampire!" The physical changes to my character are a great touch as well. For a Dark Brotherhood Assassin, I can't think of a more fun way to play than as a creature of the night.

For a scary second, I thought you were my brother, Captain Dopetastic. He loves being a vampire, but I generally look at them as evil, wicked abominations that should be burned.
Also, Uncia, there's no shame in running away. When I run into a fight and realize I've made a bit of a mistake, I just leg it as far and fast as I can.

Thing is, the bastards don't seem to leash. EVER. So running doesn't really do much except delay the inevitable battle.
Which in my case results in shooting arrows, freezing/burning them when they get too close and abusing potions.

Yeah but you can do that with melee too. And the bonus on it is 6x. With high sneak, I could backstab one monster as much as I wanted. They'd just stand there looking stupid. Someone should make a mod that makes you instantly revealed after you backstab because that's way imbalanced.

Bows are powerful in that you can exploit the AI and run around and shoot them. The combat AI doesn't really support fighting a player that uses ranged, and is in a position where the mob can't get to.
Of course, that's not the correct way to do battle at all.

The combat AI for
melee NPCs and monsters maybe, but there are just as many, if not more characters that use ranged attacks also.
Ranged weapons in close combat doesn't exploit any part of the AI though. It takes quite a bit of skill to avoid taking damage against several enemies at once for a proactive (ie, nonsneaking) bowman like my character. In that sense, all that FPS experience pays off ;)

Don't take that to mean that the skill is worthless and I did not use it. My marksman skill is quite high, but I'm not misguiding myself by believing that getting a few potshots off on the enemy is a quicker way to kill it than simply charging it in and using my 900 damage in 3 second spell on it ;)

Yeah, but that requires
them to stand in a dark area, or at least in an approachable spot. With bows, you pick your attack direction.
I really prefer not to get near Wraiths unless it's absolutely necessary. If they see me they slap me around senseless.
Fig455 on 4/4/2006 at 21:32
Wraiths are pussies. They go down fast. It's the group of 3-4 skeletons they spawn that get me dinged up at times.
