My friend got mee hooked on this rather (
http://www.welcometonightvale.com/) awesome 20-minute-an-episode series:
It's sort of a comedic Call-of-Cathulu-ish non-sequitur faux-radio announcement focusing on the town's latest news, word from the sponsors, traffic or weather update etc. It has a lot of randomness but also a good bit of recurring characters and themes like the ever-color-changing cloud, Hiram McDaniels the eighteen-foot-tall, literal five-headed dragon weighing about 3,600 pounds, or the Old woman Josie who can see and speak with angels.
Highly recommended if you're looking for a witty easy-listen while going for a 20min walk to the store. Some really clever episodes too like "This story is about You."

I've only listened to a handful of episodes, but yeah, Nightvale is pretty good! :thumb:

A little rough on the edges. It's funny though, and quirky, which helps a lot.

Welcome to Night Vale is amazing, and actually has a bunch of long serialized arcs if you pay attention properly, and it gets
super dark at a lot of points. The Sandstorm two-parter and Company Picnic are big ones. Also the 'Who's a Good Boy?' two parter that concluded the last arc.
The Night Vale writers also have two new podcasts that are unrelated to Night Vale, but both have similar weird fiction and horror influences: (
http://www.nightvalepresents.com/aliceisntdead/) Alice Isn't Dead, which just concluded its first season, and (
http://www.nightvalepresents.com/withinthewires) Within The Wires, which only recently started, and I haven't listened to yet.
Alice Isn't Dead is fantastic and gets really intense. Voiced entirely by Jasika Nicole (Intern Dana in Night Vale and also Astrid from Fringe), and she does amazing,
amazing work.

Fafhrd, yea I loved the Sandstorm episode! And my friend was recommending "Alice Isn't Dead," so definitely gotta check it out too.
Funny I always looked for news/info/educational podcasts that never quite clicked and here I am hooked on a totally fictional story thing. Guess I needed a break from information overload :p

Oh what makes you think it's rough? Not disagreeing, just curious.
It definitely gets higher quality as show goes on. The "This story is about You" (#14 I think?) and the Sandstorm (#19a and #19b) are some of the best.

I'm in the early episodes still, 1-5, so I can believe it gets higher quality as it goes. The announcer hasn't found his groove yet, like he's just reading off the news instead of delivering it like art as such. Well, granted, the style plays into the small town humility and folksy charm too, like he's really shuffling papers in a small booth, but even that can have a classic sound like Garrison Kiellor's warble. It's really the content and the writing that makes it fly so far, which is close to perfect for its schtick. But I'll hold out the style improves too.

Just listened to Alice isn't Dead and I dont think it's my cup of tea. A bit too random for my taste, and lacking the comedy of Nightvale. But the production values are excellent.

Yeah, Alice is not in any way a comedy. Nightvale's comedy comes from treating it's horror as mundanity, Alice Isn't Dead treats the horror as horror. And it's a slow, creeping, Lovecraftian horror.
