Ever since I installed Win7, I've been encountering this weird and annoying bug with the taskbar. Even though it's locked, I can still move it. It only works when the taskbar is at the bottom, in its usual position, and with this bug I can only move it to the top of the screen, not to the sides like when it's unlocked.

http://www.abload.de/img/windozegunu.pngIt happens when I right-click some open program and get this little pop-up window, and then click and drag exactly between that window and the actual button of that program (so basically just the edge of the taskbar). It happens every time, with every program and since it only moves the taskbar from the bottom to the top, but in no other direction, once it's happened I have to unlock the taskbar, move it back down and lock it again. If it's of any significance, I have Aero turned off and am using the Windows Classic theme (or 2000 theme or whatever it's called in Win7). Actually, after some further testing, it seems to happen even if I don't drag the mouse after clicking - just clicking on that spot and holding the mouse completely still for a second or so will move the taskbar to the top.
Can someone try and reproduce it on their computer? Any ideas how to stop it from happening?
Yes, I know my Windows looks ugly and I'm a horrible person for still using that outdated theme from the last century etc. etc. :p

Well, of course, first of all, get a proper theme, that 1995 look is hideous. :p
Second problem is that you're using that worthless default right-click menu, where Microsoft decided that junk like "pin to taskbar" and "open another copy of this program" is more useful than actually being able to do things like close the problem by right-click, c, or being able to use features such as maximise, minimise, restore, or special right-click menu items such as mIRC's "on top" mode.
Use this utility to remove that annoying "feature" and restore the proper right-click menu, delegating that worthless junk to only appear if you shift+click:

Oh, and I can't reproduce your problem on an Aero theme.

that's a feature of windows 7, you can disable it if you want.. Like most windows 7 feature there should be a way to disable it (I suggest a google search). Personally I quite like the feature (which is unusual for me)

Being able to move the taskbar while it's locked, but only by clicking on a very specific spot while a right-click menu is open is a feature? :weird:
And Google said nothing.

Hmm I think I got my wires crossed then, I though you just meant moving the taskbar buttons ... sorry.

I managed to reproduce the bug now, too, though for me it happens if I drag another part of the task bar which is empty and to the side of a running program (the Aero theme doesn't really have any empty taskbar space above the taskbar buttons to drag). It only happens with the new context menu, though - meaning that if you use the utility I linked to above to restore the original right-click menu, you'll only get the bug if you use shift+right click to open the new menu.

I think it's a bit easier to reproduce than that. With Win 7 64 bit if I right click on any application, leave the menu showing and then click-drag on the taskbar background it moves to the top of the screeen. Taskbar is locked (in theory) so I suspect its something they'll fix soon

Er, yes, that was basically what I meant to say, but I managed to make an incoherent and garbled sentence out of it.
It's easy to reproduce when you simply drag an empty area of taskbar (e.g. between the last application's button and the system tray), but I couldn't manage to reproduce it by clicking on the "edge" above a taskbar button, because there isn't an edge there in Aero.
Another solution would be to simply unlock the taskbar - at least then you can easily drag it back. Again, Aero doesn't display the taskbar any differently if it is locked or unlocked, so there's no real issue with having it unlocked if you're not using the classic theme - unlike in Windows 2000 or XP, which show an extra edge at the top of the task bar to indicate that it is unlocked.

I knew that! I uh... just wanted to see if uh... someone else would find it too. Yes, that's it!
NV, you are the one to say my 1995 look is hideous... with your awful black theme. My eyes hurt just when I think about it. I bet you even use a black font on black background! :p
Well, I guess I'll use that utility of yours, thanks.
