My TTLG window suddenly got that fullscreen pop-up character of no visible systray and black IE,minimize, partial size and X in black upper right. What causes this, a trojan?

Press F11. You've probably accidentally toggled IE's "Kiosk Mode".
WAREAGLE on 23/10/2003 at 14:44
ive been doing that alot and it has been driving me nuts. and another thing, you ever get that sticky key thing going where if you hit "e" it opens internet explorer
buglunch on 24/10/2003 at 00:25
Thanks, Outrider; what the heck is kiosk mode for??
I often hit something when adding a thread reply and the whole thing closes; Windows key?

I'd love to know what the hell that f11 kiosk mode is for, too. I want to hear the reasoning behind it, I want to hear how it was pitched, what the advantages of such a thing are. Why anyone thought it would be a good idea, why anyone thought people would use it.
Maybe back in the days of 13" screens and Windows 3.x and people who ran at 1024x768 being the hi-definition ÜberGeeks, but now? Hell, I don't think I've even maximised a browser window in three years.
ignatios on 24/10/2003 at 00:44
I always browse maximised, but I do everything maximised ... I just can't stand a cluttered desktop. Okay okay so ICQ isn't maximised, and neither is ICQ, but the vast majority of things are.
Computer desktop, I mean. My actual desktop is ridiculous.
The kiosk mode is probably a feature they built into IE for use at those free web terminals in Chapters/Indigo bookstores, and the like. It has no use for home PCs, but they might have decided to leave it in just so people could see it in action.
Or something™.
That's all I can think of .. that it's a curiosity that some people might want to see.

Buglunch, when typing a reply, and your window suddenly closes, that is caused by you hitting Ctrl+W. i do that every now and then when trying to hit shift
easterlingman on 24/10/2003 at 15:05
Kiosk mode? Oh
I use it all the time! Ever play a flash game/animation, and the very bottom 10 or so pixels of it are cut off? You know there's nothing there, but it aggrivates you, and changing your screen resolution would be really annoying.
Just hit F11.
TheOutrider on 24/10/2003 at 15:24
The Kiosk mode is, as the name suggests, originally intended for information terminals or computers set up at kiosks.
The concept as it's implemented in IE still has major flaws though; it is still possible to quit IE, save files, create bookmarks, catch viruses galore and so on and so forth. Opera and, with correct extensions, Firebird do it much better.

Most probably... I dunno if there is some Win-key shortcut for "close window" though, so I can't verify that.
Also, sticky keys suck giant flaming donkey balls in hell.
IMHO.

Ctrl+W not likely.
