Since the 360 doesn't come with a wireless adaptor, if I want to connect it to the internet without directly plugging into the router (which is handy when moving it to a different room, for example) I have to use my laptop as a wireless access point.
So I plug an ethernet cable from the Xbox into my laptop, turn on internet connection sharing and everything seems to work: I can access Xbox live and everything.
But after a few hours, it always screws up. I lose the connection, as well as every other internet connection in the house. My computer (and every other computer) can still see the network, but they can't connect to the internet. When I run the Windows network diagnostic, it tells me to unplug my modem for 10 seconds to reset it. This solution only works if I also reset the router, which is a huge pain.
What could be the problem here? Is there anything I could do to prevent it (or at the least, fix it without reseting the hardware?)

Do you have your laptop setup to ask for password from screensaver?
If your laptop goes to the welcome screen when it's idle for like 10 minutes, then it shuts off the internet to other computers connected to it. Disable the password thing on screensaver. Also check the power settings on your laptop. Does anything turn off after so many minutes, even when on A/C Power? Turn those settings to only when on battery.

Wish I could help, but my damned 360 won't connect to Live even when it's plugged directly into the cable modem:(

There's no password, but you might be right about the power settings. Wouldn't be the first time some hidden checkbox in the advanced settings tab makes some crucial thing stop working after a bit of idling.
Anyway, my router went haywire for a few days after I disconnected the laptop from the Xbox—the router would randomly stop connecting and everyone's internet would disappear—so I did a complete reset of all router settings, reset the network and now I'm keeping the laptop and Xbox estranged.
Aerothorn: this might sound stupid, but when you plug into the Xbox, have you tried running a connection test in the network settings? Sometimes when I connect my Xbox to the router, even if everything is ok, it won't connect until I run the test.

Ran it a million times when trying to diagnose the problem (it always fails to get an IP address). I spent forever thinking it was the router till I got the bright idea to plug it directly into the modem. Didn't work then either. Spent so much time being frustrated with it that I gave up and it's currently on the backburner till I have time to talk to Microsoft about it - it worked last summer but it's possible something happened to the Xbox hardware when being transported to/from Massachusetts that killed the net-functionality.
