Good grief. Can't you just wander a bit further out of town to the local growers market or something? I guess it's possible you couldn't.
(A friend once visited Phoenix for a while some years ago, and he insisted that he couldn't find the quirky little neighbourhood with the decent food that you always seek out in a city if you can. I still find it hard to beleive)
You have no idea. The cost of fresh produce has doubled here in the last six months. Media is starting to talk about the rising number of people filing for welfare because they can't afford gas and food. Grapes are like $5 a pound, milk is at $4, real bread is at $4, and most fruit runs close to $1 a pound at stores like Wal-mart and Kroger. Fresh produce from local grocers can even be more expensive than that now because their cost of living is going up along with everyone else's. I expect to pay about 50% more for local produce than at the store.

Even if I knew where it is, my transportation is the public bus or walking. Not sure if it's worth it for only slightly cheaper prices, when I can hit the grocery store for fruits&veggies and McD's for a lot of cheap meat.
 That sounded gay.

Why would one not "have the time" to cook?
Because most jobs only give one an hour for lunch and aren't equipped with a fully stocked free for all kitchen with a range and oven? And after 8 hours in the office, most people aren't exactly in the mood to spend a couple of hours preparing food for the next day at the office? Not to mention that what one cooks for oneself the previous evening might not be what one is in the mood for by the time lunch rolls around the next day.
And one might be able to make a filling and nutritious soup from scratch on the cheap, but I for one sure as hell wouldn't want to eat soup every day.

Are you kidding? Produce is expensive.
San Diego, CA. Two Fuji apples, @ $1.24/lb, cost around $1.60.
McDonalds: double cheeseburger, $1.08.

I promise not to complain about our prices for stuff anymore.
That said, this does strike me as one of those situations where a person is willing to spend X amount of dollars and time sweating and suffering and dieting and reading trying to get themselves in shape. But they won't spend more time walking a little further or preparing lunch the night before to, you know, save a goodly amount every week and achieve certain similar disciplinary and health goals.
I know it's not always possible, buuuut...

Buying your own bread and fillings of choice from the supermarket might not exactly be Fresh Farm Produce, but it's most likely still healthier than readymade stuff, a fraction the price, and takes all of 5 minutes to throw together.

Hey, I didn't say it was
sensible. Me personally, I'd love to cook right now, only I don't have a kitchen in the barracks. But I think that's the problem; people look a the prices on the good stuff compared to McDs, and the time it'll take them to make it, and go "screw that!" Then spend all their time complaining that they're a hundred pounds overweight.

Why would one not "have the time" to cook? I mean, you are actually putting something on your body--wouldn't you somehow find the time to make sure that "something" isn't the equivalent of pig-shit
Fast food wouldn't even make the top ten list of questionable things I've put in my body.

Does Scots count as questionable?
