It truly is cheaper to eat better.
I disagree wholeheartedly. Purely on the "dollar per calorie" rating, junk food is much cheaper.

If you have time to spare, you can eat well for little money, at least in Europe. Fresh fruit and veggies don't cost that much. However, if you don't have that much time and have to buy ready-made food from shops or restaurants, it's cheaper to eat crap that's bad for you. It's probably one of the reasons why it's easy to gain weight if you've got a busy office job - sandwich lunches tend to be quite bad in terms of fat and calories.

And salt! I was at Gatwick and had to get a sandwich from M&S (supermarket) and couldn't find one that didn't have about 40% of my RDA of salt.

At least M&S has great sandwiches - I'd so kill for a good BLT right now! Most sandwiches here cost twice as much and are only half as good...

Well, at my local grocery store, 2 apples cost more than a fast food burger.

Why would one not "have the time" to cook? I mean, you are actually putting something on your body--wouldn't you somehow find the time to make sure that "something" isn't the equivalent of pig-shit?
Yakoob--I wasn't saying anything about junk food (which is cheaper, but you might as well eat plastic).

AND, we spend a lot less on our grocery bill (quite a substantial margin) as we actually make food from simple ingredients bought instead of buying prepared items.
I was saying it was cheaper to buy the items and make your own. In fact, when my wife and I were first married, and completely broke, I'd make a soup out of maybe $10.00-$15.00 worth of ingredients that would last us for a week; and it was a very filling and nutritious soup.

Eek. Where do you live? A drilling platform above the arctic circle?
The_Raven on 26/8/2008 at 02:35
That would be such a sweet place to live.

Are you kidding? Produce is expensive.
San Diego, CA. Two Fuji apples, @ $1.24/lb, cost around $1.60.
McDonalds: double cheeseburger, $1.08.
The apples are better for me. But the cheeseburgers are cheaper, if you're comparing the cost
per calorie.

Good grief. Can't you just wander a bit further out of town to the local growers market or something? I guess it's possible you couldn't.
(A friend once visited Phoenix for a while some years ago, and he insisted that he couldn't find the quirky little neighbourhood with the decent food that you always seek out in a city if you can. I still find it hard to beleive)
