If I understand correctly, if you did a google search for 'Palmerston North pulsating center of the universe' (for example) and visited TTLG from the results page, then that term would show up as the google referrer even if you actually arrived at TTLG via one of your own bookmarks or by typing the URL in manually.

I checked my own server logs and the referrer field is blank unless you actually followed a link.

Yeah, that's how it works. I'd only know what pr0n sites you've visited if the site had a link to TTLG on it.
