In the vanilla game I never used the groza because the ammo was so hard to get, so I'd keep whatever I could for the Vintorez.
Like I said, I only use the modified Groza, which uses 5.45 ammo, and that one is quite easy to get. I never use the 'normal' Groza.
Barin is always found wandering at the Bar. Sometimes it takes a little patience, but all I have to do is follow him around until he finally gets killed by the dogs. Sometimes I get lucky: on my last game I got tired of waiting and attacked him near the passage from the Bar to the Garbage (I had killed all the dogs before, so they weren't there to kill him). I didn't kill him, but injured him badly, so he dropped the gun and was left moaning on the ground. Then some dogs showed up coming from the Garbage and finished the job, so I didn't get the blame for his death :cheeky:

I've never had the patience waiting for Barin to get bumped off so I could get his gun. Most of the times I've followed him he wandered out of the Bar area into Wild Territory before vanishing. For 5.45 I prefer Strelok's rifle as the accuracy is great and you can scope it, likewise for the LR300 and ammo is plentiful for both so I don't have to worry about stocking up for either.
I do like the Groza, though, and I always make a point of picking up the one in Lab X18 near Ghost's corpse (or X16, I can never remember which is which. The Brain Scorcher one) and use that on my way back to the mobile science lab as I'm usually quite low on 5.56 by that time.

As far as I can see, the Groza has more damage than the AK, but the AK has more accuracy, firing speed and reliability (its reliability seems to be so high that the weapon's condition never goes down in fact)

The 7.62mm ammo does pathetic damage compared to everything else though, in the unmodded game at least. What was a struggle with the AK in the early part of the game you can waltz through with with a nato gun (once you get one).

yes, I think it's the most accurate unscoped assault rifle in the entire game. It has very soft recoil too, and can be modified with grenade launcher. G36 is better anyway - it's scoped and has greater damage per bullet.
Well this is the thing, I find it considerably more accurate than using any of the scoped ARs and slightly more damage doesn't help when you miss. I don't know if it's me or the game, but I've even tried them side by side; zoom in with the G36 and I'll see every second bullet whiz buy some guy's head. Try it with the SIG and rarely do i miss. It doesn't make much sense to me either, maybe I'm nuts.

It has been quite awhile since i played vanilla without repair mod, so this opinion a) is based on repair cost too and b) of course factores in you cant "loose" weapons anymore and therefore dont need to hold back :p
I kinda seperate the game into 4 parts :
1) Pre-Bar (Cordon, Garbage, Dark Valley, Agropom) : 7.62 weapons fully sufficient, optimally the fast-shooting AK. Its cheap to repair, versatile and relatively powerful, plus the main ammo type dropped is 7.62 so you wont run out that fast. Spaz or Winchester Shotgun should rape anything there too. Modified Groza if Barin has an accident one way or the other :p
2) Bar (Wild Territory, Yantar) : Wild Territory can be "farmed" for 5.56 so use of the L300 or Sig there doesnt put a dent into resources, not necessary tho. Maybe on first entering, rescuing Kruglov from the mercs can be tricky on higher difficulty (or with mods :d ). For Yantar id recommend the Spaz/Winchester, especially in the lab, 7.62 works too but expect to pump full magazines into stuff before it drops.
3) Post-Bar (Warehouses, Red Forest, Prypiat) : Ya can still get around Warehouses with an AK but attempting stuff like the first border defense or attacking Duty would be making things overly difficult, at that point i mostly got a pretty big stack of 5.56 saved up and it can be farmed at the little merc post. Prefer the Sig just because it looks and sounds cooler. Some dead Freedom might yield a G36, heinously expensive to repair at little advance over the other 5.56 weps but mebbe im just being stingy, would rather sell em. Stuff starts dropping Vintorez ammo regulary but i wouldnt use it yet.
Red Forest has alot of AK-wielding Monolith, id use 5.56 weps for less of an headache tho, especially near that litte tunnel with the Exoskeleton guys. Wont hurt in the lab either. 5.56 weps for Prypiat too, Vintorez in the west area with the respawning military if ya want to farm them for their ammo.
4) Endgame (NPP and so on) : Vintorez or die, 5.56 for the FN2000

Do you call 5.45x39 7.62, or what is 7.62?

For not moded game there is so many free weapons laying around and player usually accumulates so much money that it's no problem to throw damaged weapon out and find or buy a new one.
About grenade launchers - IF anyone sold rounds for them in the game in endless amounts, then possibility to attach GL or built-in launcher would be a really major factor for determining what weapon is better because the rounds are really light in the game - 100 rounds would weight only 8kgs. But the problem is their big shortage, I rarely accumulate more than 30-40 pieces even when do many quests for Voronin.

7.62 is AK ammo isnt it? Afraid it has been some time since i played Stalker at all too. :o
EDIT : Ah yup, meant 5.45x39, AK ammo. 7.62 was sniper or something :p

Does anyone know which assault rifle is better/more practical in RL - LR300 or SIG550 (Swiss gun)?
In SoC, SIG550 has bigger wounding power but instead is slower and less accurate. I know H&K G36 beats them all, but I'm wondering about those two.
steo on 1/5/2009 at 13:01
I would guess it would be the LR300. It's based on the AR-15 and M4 carbine, it's lighter, newer and more compact and probably has softer recoil. I couldn't say anything about accuracy or damage however, in real life these things are much more objective than in computer games.
The LR300 (546mm) is actually almost half the length of the SIG550 (998mm), so I'm guessing less power and accuracy. They were designed for different purposes though, so practically, the LR300 is going to be a lot better close up, while the SIG550 is going to be better at range. A more comparable rifle to the LR300 would be the SIG552, which is a shorter variant of the 550 but obviously not in stalker. The other thing is that factors like weight and size are more or less null and void in computer games, so the bigger, more accurate, more powerful weapon is usually going to win every time.
Also, a little bonus clarification:
7.62x54mm is the round that the dragunovs in stalker fire.
7.62x39mm is the round that the AK47 uses.
5.45x39mm is the russian AR round in stalker, used by the AK74 and abakan.
5.56x45mm is the nato rifle round.

These are total lenghts, not barrel lenghts, which is what matters when it comes to accuracy.
There are two versions of LR300: ML and SR. ML was the first model, it's 293mm; SR is the new model, it's 419mm. Judging by the looks, the model in game is the SR model.
SIG550's barrel lenght is 528mm.
We don't have MoA data for any of them, but I'd have to go with LR300-SR too - it's newer(SIG is almost 40 years old!), lighter(1kg - huge difference) and from what I know people both in and out of military love it.
(Of course, Groza still blows them both out of the water! :p)
