That'd have to be some really bad luck. If you were to take a terrible quality weapon into the BotM, the odds of anything bad happening are one in four. But even then, the odds of anything catastrophic happening are only one in a hundred.
So statistically, we're looking at a mere .25% chance of your gun ever exploding. That's low enough that the majority of players won't ever see it happen. But the simple fact that it is there adds a whole new level of tension to the proceedings.

After years of playing NetHack, that isn't reassuring in the slightest. :p
I guess it'd be the kind of bad luck that would warrant a reload anyhow. And tension is a good thing, that's why I like the degradation in the first place.

Your Stasis Field Generator has exploded in your face, slaying you instantly!
Do you want your possessions identified? (y/n)

While I enjoy the idea you proposed. I think you give a bit much credit to the quality of random number generators in most PC programs.
Most tend to suffer streaks. So I have to disagree with part of your statement there. A majority may very well see it and might even see it twice in succession. An event no doubt followed by cussing I'm sure.
