The plus is it means you can get into a legal mind altered state that doesn't do the damage that alcohol does.
Alcohol often has part in stabbings, domestic violence, rapes, traffic accidents, manslaughters etc. - would this wonderful new stuff not do that?

I reckon you just assume someone is going to stab or rape you, then work down from there.

Come on Vas, do I have to read the article for you?
Won't cause such mood effects so perhaps less likely to cause violence, and can be switched off so its safe to drive.
And if you're going to rape someone when drunk lets face it you were up for raping anyway.

I can't speak to distilled products, because I really don't have much experience with em, but for wine and beer this is a bust. The process of removing alcohol from these products, whether it be spinning cone or reverse osmosis completely buttfucks the original product. The alcohol goes, along with the fresh flavors, balance, and finesse. I guess this probably isn't the target market for the developments, and with stuff like ready-to-drink mixers where you don't taste the alcohol in the first place it'd probably work.

Sorry, I didn't read the article, only this thread... I know I'm lazy, but that question popped to mind after seeing all the headlines of alcohol-induced Christmas-time incidents, how family shelters are crowded etc.
Personally, I believe hangover is good for the soul.

Soma!!!!!!!!!!
This is interesting. Can it be said to truly get rid of the addictive element? The argument has been made here that pot isn't addictive although I beg to differ both from personal use and seeing what its done to friends. Sure, there is no physical dependance but there is a strong conscious desire to shackle up with Mary Jane at certain points in the day. This is because it is fun and euphoric. If this new alcohol is going to be fun and relaxing then surely that state of mind can be addictive/habit forming?

Essentially they are researching alternate drugs that will have the effects of booze without leaving you with the hangover
Erm, they must be ebil researchers, aren't they? I mean hangover is one of the serious deterrents.

I'm with RBJ. Maintaining control over the effects of being wasted totally emasculates the experience and makes it pointless. I can be stupid without being drunk, but there is no substitute for being stupid drunk.

What are the odds that such a thing would be made legal, anyway? I mean, if the standard of legality of recreational drugs were "safer than alcohol" there'd be a lot more legal substances around...

Really? Please expand.
