Yeah, I must admit to not hearing about it until maybe a couple of years ago and only in the "zomg watchmen" geekery sense.

Watchmen is exactly as obscure as halo.

Well I never read a comicbook in my life. And I just today finished reading this watchmen. Damn. Simply incredible.
Though I don't see how this director will be able to pull of such a movie. The only movie of his i know is 300 which was action porn and had no plot. This comic has all plot and the action doesn't matter (to me). I know he will have it stylized and jaw dropping with cgi, but will be a a work of art.
Damn, it made the top 100 for books. Damn good for a graphic novel.
With that said. I'm preordering the collector's edition.
Does anyone know any other graphic novels with these sorts of themes that I would like?

Hard to say what you mean by "these sorts of themes," but The Sandman is a classic, as is V for Vendetta and Transmetropolitan.

I'm quite partial to (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandman_Mystery_Theatre) Sandman Mystery Theater. Then again, I've only read two of the collections. Also, I'm not really that informed when it comes to graphic novels; I mostly rely on recommendations from a friend of mine who is really into comic books. I haven't read watchmen either, but from what I've heard here, I'll definitely check it out.

I'm about three issues into the Watchmen and while I think it's an interesting story so far, I'm not terribly into the way they are telling it - I'm finding Hollis' autobiography a bore (and come on, if you can't tell us through the medium you're using perhaps you're not giving it enough thought) and thrusting us into situations with unknown characters (like Moloch) can be a little confusing a times, same with the cut-up chronology of events. Still, it's intriguing enough to read... having read a few issues I can see several scenes from the "graphic novel" having been translated onto the screen pretty much perfectly, visually speaking.

The end of chapter prose bits are almost entirely world building flavour that isn't connected to the main plot. All the important parts of 'Under the Hood' are reiterated in the comic itself. I actually think I skipped them altogether the first time I read it.

Yeah, all the prose bits are flavour stuff that aren't necessary to understand the main story. You can comfortably skip them entirely your first time through. It's one of those things that works brilliantly in the singles where you have to wait a month or so to get the next part of the story, but less so in a collection where you can plough through everything in one go.
