Saw this on Friday at the Odeon in L.Square (which I still maintain that while expensive, is the best place to enjoy a blockbuster big movie).
To continue the trains of thought here, I wont comment on how perfect the dude playing Roscharch was - but I will comment on the following:
The ending that "replaced" the squid from the book was such a non-event that it didnt feel that dramatic. For me at least, the horrific ending in the novel is seeing the dead bodies piled on top of each other with Laurie and Doc M wandering through it - I at least thought we'd see something similar with the nuke or whatever the hell that was going off. But it just sorta happened, a quick cgi bit and then we moved on. Thats all that really bothered me about the final act. Not that he replaced the squid, but more that I didnt feel the same horror and shock - it was just a fizzle and that was it.
I do want to see it again, and I'm desperate to get my grubby hands on the Black Freighter DVD. Oh yes, the 4 hour or whatever Directors Epic Cut will be on my dvd shelf...

For my part I enjoyed the film but just feel that in order to make an acceptable running time a lot of the intellectual content and meaning of the book was lost. I also think it would have been improved by an original soundtrack as a lot of the songs were out of place (Halleluiah in particular).
In many ways I wish they hadn’t tried to follow the book so faithfully and entirely centralised it on Rorschach. My friends who havent read the novel say that they found him to be the most interesting character.

I'm probably going to end up seeing the movie next weekend. I hate the idea of going alone but I can't find anyone who wants to go with me.

Whats wrong with "aww"?
I geniuenly feel sorry - Watchmen should be experience with people you know.
When I saw it on Friday night it was in a cinema full of geeks who kept shouting MEGATRON LIVES! during the Transformers 2 trailer. It was hilarious.
Nerds rule the world.
and girls find it hot.

Everyone I saw it with liked it except me. I think I just gave up about 30 minutes in - I kept having issues with each and every scene, and feel like the only way I could give a really accurate "reaction" to the film was to write down reactions to every scene and collate them.
It wasn't subtle, the narrative flow was wildly inconsistent, and the film didn't seem to have any idea what its philosophy was. I'll save you all my issues with every little aspect, except to say: WTF was with Nixon? In the book, he's portrayed with at least a degree of complexity, someone who recognizes the weight and horror of the decisions he is called to make. Here, it's some guy (in the worst Nixon makeup that has ever graced a big-budget picture) going "Nuke 'em!". Dan Akroyd's Nixon has ten times as much depth as this guy.
