to summarize, yep, Watchmen was all hype.

Ebert has given it 4 stars out of 4, that's good enough for me.

I didn't like the movie enough to say it was that good. That is mainly due to the direction the movie had been taken by Zach. As I feared, about half of the movie was in slow-motion. There also was gore for the sake of gore, it had absolutely no purpose. It might have worked on 300, but this movie should be a bit different. Fighting scenes were mostly abrupt and useless and the whole movie was badly paced. There was scenes that just made me cringe. I didn't like the way they had tacked music on it either, it should have been diegetic instead of extra-diegetic. It was really horrible when Jon was in Vietnam for example. There wasn't enough screentime for the characters to be fleshed out and work.
Wasn't all bad though. Surprisingly good ending, possibly the first one where an altered ending to the original works. I had no qualms about what they included and what they didn't include overall. Though, it's to be said that since Watchmen is such a big comic album, it's impossible to get the characters work as they should on screen.
Gugino as Silk Spectre was a drone. It was hard to spot any feelings at all on her, although she's the one who's possibly the most distressed in the whole ordeal. The actress who was Ms. Jupiter was bad too, the moment she started speaking I realised I am watching an actress instead of Ms. Jupiter. Otherwise the casting worked. I was really surprised by Veidt. The actor made him work even though the movie projected him as too much of a normal villain. Props to him. Rorsach was amazing. His death was the best part of the movie, spot on.
Overall, I didn't feel the movie captured what it should have. The superheroes were supposed to be just a bunch of guys hiding behind masks and somehow getting famous doing it. The thing that makes Watchmen good is the amazing psychological palette of the characters and that didn't come through in this film.
Gugino has a really nice ass though. Beats the CGI-cock.

Just came back from watching this myself. Agree with a lot that Kuuso has said - surprised at Veidt, Ms. Jupiter [Malin Akerman] was badly acted (then again, boobies! ), alternative ending worked - but I probably enjoyed it more than him, from the sounds of it.
Judging by the speed at which they left afterwards, the other people in the cinema didn't though. Snippets of conversation I picked up on the way seem to confirm this: "the story didn't make sense!" and "there wasn't enough superhero stuff in it!" Eh, well.

Well, I just watched it. Didn't really like it. The first half actually had some very good bits, but the second one is practically one long retard session.
The gore is indeed very silly. It's like they realized the word "fuck" appeared in the script three times, said "hey, what the hell, we'll probably get an 18+ rating anyway" and turned the gore up to 11.
A lot of cool stuff was left out, but that's understandable. I was more impressed with all the stuff that actually made it in. That said, some of it simply doesn't work. Holy crap, The Comedian is Laurie's father? Well... so what?
AND WHERE IS MY MOTHERFUCKING SQUID MISTER SNYDER:mad:

My only significant problem with it is that it failed to really connect emotionally (but I'm given to believe that the Direcor's Cut may correct that). As an adaptation of the source, it's the best that anyone could have possibly expected it to be, given the 2:45 running time. It solidly nails the psychological aspects of the book, but kind of falls down in some of the aesthetics. Namely the action, which features too many feats of superhuman strength from the human characters and breaks their believability. I also wasn't big on the musical usage, though I can understand what Snyder was going for with the majority of the choices, so maybe it will grow on me with repeat viewings.
