Something Awful has a short advance review if anyone's interested. It could be fake, but the tone of the article suggests otherwise.
Quote:
I admit that I have not been a longtime fan of Watchmen, the groundbreaking comic book series and graphic novel by acclaimed comic book creator Neil Gaiman.

Then things get really confusing. It shows a science lab back in the 1940s and it shows a scientist getting killed by radiation, but then he mysteriously reappears only he is blue and he can do whatever he wants. He can kill people with his mind and he knows everything. At one point he makes himself gigantic and destroys an entire army. This is Doctor Atomic, founder of the Watchmen. But Doctor Atomic is missing and nobody knows where he has gone. Rorschach thinks he was killed, but retired Watchman Ozymandias thinks Doctor Atomic is still alive.

As one website has highlighted, reviews on blogs etc seem to be trending towards the positive, whilst the more 'mainstream' reviewers are not so hot on the film. I'll be seeing it anyway, so meh.

RT had it at ~80% after a bunch of advance reviews, if that ain't damning criticism, I don't know what is.

Really? I should visit RT a lot more than I actually do, it seems.

My opinion is that for genre films, specifically but not exclusively, the review rating will always be extremely high (as in mid 90s) when it first airs if the reviewers were extremely positive - indicating, at best, mild positives from general reviewers. If genre specific reviewers were plucked and hit mid 80s, not a good sign. Generally. I could be wrong.

Also, keep in mind that RT uses a binary system; a review is good or bad. If a film got entirely lukewarm "more good than bad, though in no way great" reviews, it would get 100% on RT. If you want to go with review-collating sites (which, IMHO, always have issues) I think Metacritic is better - and they have Watchmen at 44 out of 100. It's also worth noting that the one super-positive review (from the NYP) is from someone who intentionally did not write the graphic novel and knew nothing going in - which, I believe, will make it seem a lot better than if you've read the original work (as it will seem very fresh that way).
