To some people adaptation means the whole bloody graphic novel, panel by panel, in movie form.
Those people are idiots.

I've got the feeling that no matter how good or bad of a movie this is, it's going to bomb. I mean, look at all their advertising thus far. It's aimed at one audience only: people who read and liked the comic.
I highly doubt that's a large enough force to bring in the box office moolah.
Also Scots, that is basically Snyder's approach. He literally carries a copy of the comic around with him on set, using it as a storyboard.

Thing is, and admittedly I'm only halfway through the Graphic Novella, Watchman is insanely depressing.
Ultimately we're going to get a very character-driven, good looking depressing movie that not everyone is going to get.

looks like they've chosen the youthful cast to nail the regular comic-book movie demographic into coming along,
I'm fairly certain they chose the youthful cast because it's easier to age performers with make-up than it is to make them younger for the flashback segments where they're still in their prime.
Until we see a shot of Patrick Wilson in character as Dan Dreiberg, instead of in full Night Owl costume, it's really impossible to make the call that they've cast too young; and really, the actors aren't all that much younger than the characters that they're playing. Malin Ackerman and Matthew Goode are the youngest at 30, Wilson is 35 and Jeffrey Dean Morgan is 42. Respectively, Laurie is supposed to be in her early 30s, Veidt and Dreiberg in their early 40s, and Blake's in his mid to late 50s.

Uh... from the trailer where they're as themselves in "modern day" in the housefire and in the prisonbreak, they're clearly seen as being the same youthful types that are presented in promo shots etc.
Hey, I could be wrong and hope I am though.

Just in terms of acting, I can see Patrick Wilson pulling off Dan Dreiberg. He was very good as a midlife crisis-struck Everyman in Little Children and doesn't strike me as the kind of limited actor who feels he has to play perfect, heroic characters.
Any thoughts on how good Snyder is at directing actors? People tend to forget the importance of the director when it comes to acting.

You mean the parts where they're in full superhero costume? Where the only one who's face you can see clearly is Malin Ackerman, who is actually the same age as Laurie Juspeczyk? Way to miss my point, Scots.

I know Patrick Wilson actually gained weight for his role as Nite Owl, so that's promising. I'll agree that the cast is generally a bit young, but I'm more concerned about the relentless STYLE of what we've seen so far. Watchmen is by design pretty flat.
Still, I'll be there opening weekend to see if they pulled it off.

Sorry if this has already been discussed, I haven't read the whole thread because....eh...why bother rationalizing, I'm a lazy bastard.
Anyway- I think 90% of the reason I want to see this movie is just to see how general audiences react to the graphic novels extremely bizarre and depressing ending. I mean- a giant genetically engineered octopus is teleported to the center of New York City by the supervillian which then causes a massive explosion which kills everyone there. This causes the Soviet Union who was about to nuke the shit out of us, to think we as a race are under attack by aliens and cancel the launch. This effectively causes a brief world peace meaning that the supervillian's plan worked, and the heroes are left to stand around scratching their heads....then one of them blows up.
I mean, how the hell are people going to respond to this? I can't wait to hear the comments when walking out of the theater, though I guarantee most of them will be along the lines of "Wait......what?", and not all that entertaining.
Angel Dust on 6/8/2008 at 20:10
I'm pretty sure most people will get it. They will debate the sanity of the alien plan to bring about world peace or whether it was worth killing those innocents etc but that's the point anyway.
