I'd imagine the biggest help would be having the screen pressed right against your eyeballs, since you'd be able to use an accurate FOV without most of the view being cut off.

Yeah, I'd say understanding the world(judging upcoming turns, etc.) is slightly easier and more natural in VR, but it's hard to say after my short time with it.

The cost of that is you really have to squeeze your eyeball lenses to put light coming from a surface that close into focus, which would wear them out in no time. So I understand that's not in the cards. This is incidentally one of the beauties of the fiber-optic projection approach, since then they could put the projections out of phase with each other as if the light were actually coming from a distance back, and then your lenses could put them into focus without flexing much at all. And it's easier to cover your whole field of vision and get the right FOV.
