It's just there's a few comments that seemed to be saying 'Renz, draw something I like, the way I like it', which isn't really what I'd consider good advice. Yeah, I can totally agree with that sentiment. I don't think I really did that though, just disagreeing with the Loomis is the bible comment and offering what I think is better (also from what I've seen of Nicolaides art, I don't like it much either, just recommending the drawing exercises).
Anyway Renz or whomever will have to get used to a certain amount of closed mindedness in the art world, various cliques and such..;)
In summary: pencil mileage is really the key.

I'll draw a dinosaur butthole, then you can tell me what kind of dinosaur it comes from.

I cannot go home-er. I have reached my house, I am in my underpants, inside my own house.

If you are interested in contour drawing I'd recommend the Kimon Nicholaides book, 'The Natural Way to Draw'. It starts off with contour drawing, then into gesture drawing, tonal drawing etc. In theory you synthesize all these methods by the end.
Thank you! I bought the book earlier today, and just did my first half hour exercise, and it's exactly what I'm looking for. I'll spare myself and everyone else the embarrassment of my first attempts, cuz...damn...they're terrible. Save for one I did of my thumb, which came out shockingly close to exact. I think I'm gonna keep practicing this first part for a bit longer than the book recommends, because being able to trace with my eyes while keeping my hand trained to what I'm looking at is something I really want to get good at.

It's a fairly big commitment though (375 hours at least to go through all the exercises, but if you are drawing one hour a day that is only a year or so..True mastery takes decades anyway IMO).
Contour is pretty fun..at first you get hilarious errors in position and scale if you really don't look at the page at all (pure contour drawing).
I'm in no hurry. I have a feeling that trying to rush through the process will only set me back and frustrate me anyway. Since I'm not expecting to be able to draw perfect figures, landscapes, and rooms down to exacting details by this time next month, I might as well take my time with it and learn everything slowly and steadily.
I probably need to strengthen my hand a bit, too. Even after just half an hour, my whole forearm is killing me.
Also, I figured I'd go ahead and post this doodle of a coffee cup I made just the day before. It's nothing spectacular, but I'm kinda proud of how it turned out. My ellipses and perspective turned out great, and I did the whole thing freehand, with no guides or anything to lean back on (which I'm sure is a bad habit to get into). Even the shading's pretty good.

Edit: A little while ago, I had this weird idea suddenly pop in my head. I thought that if I imagine a dot, like a laser pointer, running along the contours of what I'm drawing, I might be able to produce better results. I gave it a go, figuring it can't be any worse than my previous attempts. I got my drawing board out (I'm fancy), slapped a sheet of paper on it, leaned it up against my desk, and traced my thumb from the my wrist all the way around to where it meets with the meaty part of my palm.
Inline Image:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/3018396/Examples/Thumb.jpgThis is one continuous line, drawn without looking at the paper once (though I did run over it with my pencil once afterwards). It's not 100% perfect. Some of the features are exaggerated a bit. But it's scarily close.
