When Otherside Entertainment, creators of upcoming Ultima Underworld successor, Underworld Ascendant, slipped us a teaser for System Shock 3 in early December, that was cause for the hype train to roll out—
founder Paul Neurath worked on the original System Shock, after all. Now the train is in danger of becoming a runaway as Warren Spector joins the company.
Spector was producer, designer and director on the likes of the first System Shock, Deus Ex and the Ultima series. He's been advising Otherside on Underworld Ascendant since it was founded, but now (or rather, when he finishes teaching this semester at The University of Texas) he'll be inducted to the ranks of Otherside's studio directors.
In addition to helping out on Underworld Ascendant, Spector will be taking the helm of System Shock 3, making this as authentic an entry in the System Shock series as anyone could have hoped for.
"When the opportunity to have a bigger role in bringing Underworld Ascendant to life, as well as playing in the System Shock universe once again, helping to bring these games to a 21 st century audience, I just couldn't say no," Spector said in a statement. "Working on System Shock was one of the most fulfilling things I've done in my career and it's hard to describe how much I'm looking forward to sharing with players what SHODAN has been up to since the last game was released.”

Awesome news, it's going to be a fun couple of years in gaming. This will keep TTLG busy too.

Keep that man away from my SS3. :(

Eh? Why, just because of Deadly Shadows?

I could guess it's because he made almost no real work at LGS but PR, negotiations and talking (mainly about himself). Or that's how it seems to me. No good news.

When I first read this I immediately had two thoughts. The System Shock graffiti and Spector's Epic Mickey games which I haven't played but seem to recall the player could paint in the gameworld with a paint brush.
Not sure why those two thoughts entered my head though.

I hadn't heard until today that Nate Wells is actually on board with Otherside as well (but working on the Underworld game). They are assembling quite the staff over there. You have to assume he'll eventually work on SS3 too.

Amazing to hear that the old team is getting back together. Looking forward to both projects.
Never understood the hate for either Warren Spector or Ken Levine in this place. The pros of their works must outweigh the disappointment they have given people.
I heard Nate Wells was also on board some time ago. Great news as well. I was myself disappointed when he left Irrational when he did, but now he's back at the beginning as it were.
Now to announce a remake (no sequel needed) for Terra Nova. Brandt is such an ass, but played so well. Something like Biff from Back to the Future. And the cover art.

I'm another one who's glad to see Warren Spector associated with this.

I don't mind Warren Spector joining. I may not always agree with his viewpoints, but I think he has a lot of experience to offer to the project and I think his heart is in the right place as far as things like advancing the medium or player freedom is concerned.
