As many of you know, Half-life is on Steam for 98 cents. I went ahead and picked it up. Then I downloaded the High-resolution pack that was "fixed for steam version" installed it to C:/Steam/Steamapps/.../valve/(whatever folder goes here). Started up the game AND....nothing changed. Everything looks the bloody same.
So, I was poking around and found people with textures. Piles and piles of textures, some really beautiful. But their just picture files, with various names...no Idea where I would put them to get them in single player campaign.
So my question(s) are: Does anyone have any advice on how to fix the HD mod? or how do I add my own custom textures to the game? or Does anyone know where I can get another texture pack for the game that's easy to install.
The original textures have a charm to them, but things just aren't as scary as they used to be when we've spent the last 10 years looking at blood and guts in higher and higher definition.

I don't think there are any high res environment texture packs for HL1. The HD pack only replaces objects/models really, it's a bit like EP for Thief in that respect.
There's (
http://hl-improvement.com/news/2008/11/19/still-alive/) HL Enhanced in the works, but that's been in development for years and it doesn't seem like it will be released any time soon.
Anyway, try (
http://planethalflife.gamespy.com/fullstory.php?id=105708) downloading and reinstalling the fixed HD pack again. They have to be installed to this directory:- [drive letter]:\...\Steam\steamapps\[account name]\half-life\valve\
I recommend installing the HD pack and then going one step further and using (
http://ambientimpact.hl-improvement.com/index.htm) "Super Definition" models on top of that. They are based on the further improved PS2 version assets; which featured detacted retinas and blinking eyes, in addition to more complex geometry.
Also the MP3s of the soundtrack included with Steam version are very low quality, 64kbps CBR. I had uploaded some high quality VBR rips, but Filefront seems to have taken them down. (
http://files.filefront.com/Half+Life+Hi+Quality+MP3+Pack/;4031488;/fileinfo.html) Use these for now; 128kbps shit but it's better than the defaults.

Sweet, thx on the mp3s. I tried reinstalling the mod..no difference as far as I can tell, but maybe I've just been spoiled by HL2. The other site confuses the hell out of me. downloaded a zip and it has 3 folders: gearbox, svencoop, and valve. Obviously valve seemed like the appropriate one.
BUT next I tried to grab an alien slave model enhancement and all it had was svencoop and gearbox. wierd...Would love to get those higher quality mp3, but thx for the 128's. Errrr, where do they go?

The most obvious difference between the HD pack and the original assets are the pistol, machine gun and shotgun - they are completely different (the changes are entirely cosmetic, of course). Eg the original Glock was replaced with a Baretta; original MP5 with a M4 Carbine; and the original shotgun with a SPAS.

Versions in the Gearbox folders are likely optimised for the expansion packs, Opposing Force and Blue Shift. Try the files in the Gearbox or Bshift folder, if there's no valve subdirectory in the archive - they should still work.

Do mean where did my high quality rips go? I have no idea, I presume that Filefront took them down due to copyright issues.
If you were asking where to install the 128kbps rips:-
[drive letter]:\...\Steam\steamapps\[account name]\half-life\valve\media\
It should be listed in the supplied readme though.

Whoops, I must've scrolled too fast through them, or had my window to small or something, cause I missed it the first time around.
I'll try the gearbox then..Thx again.
