Hello fellow Thief-fans,
I´m pretty sure many of you already noticed that two of the most important threads in this forum, namely the "Walkthroughs, Loot lists and Lets Plays...All in one place!" and the "Kamyk's Mission by Type Thread (2021 Revamp)" thread are not being updated anymore some time after Fortuni left here. At first Fortuni and I agreed that I would give him the names of the missions including the categories and he would still add them then, but he is not doing that anymore.
In my opinion these two threads are really important and need to be kept updated, so players can easily find missions and help for them. I have talked to admin Nickie about it and I´m willing to update these two threads in case no one else would want to do it. I´d have to completely start over with both threads since they were started by Fortuni and it´s not possible for someone else to edit them.
If anyone else would be willing to help out with this project I´d appreciate the help.

Hello Samantha
> ... In my opinion these two threads are really important and need to be kept updated
I agree entirely. They were a massive contribution by Fortuni. I imagined he’d return one day. But perhaps not.
I’d love to offer help but there are too many reasons why not, which I won’t bore you with.
I assume the ttlg message-board engine does not allow for dual sign-ons to an account, so it can’t be handed down to a newer generation to continue the work if they don’t know the password. Obvious. I’m just thinking aloud :).
I guess Fortuni himself had to redo Kamyk’s thread from scratch, while remaining true to the original.
And from what you’ve said, it is not possible to come to some arrangement to share the present fortuni password in order to maintain those two threads.
Again that’s understandable.
Does this suggest that before the two threads are re-created (if it can't be avoided) it might be sensible to create a new fictitious-member account that several existing members can share (the password and responsibilities). And do the work from that account. Then later when one of them wishes to retire, a new person can be recruited, avoiding the present problem being repeated?

Yes, fortuni did do it all again and carried on the same layout as it was easier but it still took a very long time doing it and checking and double and triple checking links etc. It isn't anything to do with fortuni's password, it's just the database won't do it. And we take protection of people's privacy and personal details very seriously so no-one could log in as him. And he hasn't gone, he's just too busy.
I like the idea of a fictitious account though and I shall consult the oracle to see if this is feasible.

Thanks Nickie
Yes I realised I don’t have a clue about the mechanics of such a thread with it’s database.
If such a fictitious account could be created, I was idly wondering what name it might be given.
Perhaps “Oracle” might be a contender, unless it's already taken within the hierarchy, of which I know nothing.
All of you are Gods as far as I'm concerned. :)

I like that idea too :) more people could log in with it and work on the threads, in case there are others that want to help out.
And as already mentioned, in case someone cant work on it anymore, someone else could take over without having to start from scratch once again :)

I think the database would blow up if more than one person was trying to use it at the same time. Waiting for thoughts from other staff and will get back to you.
I've adjusted the thread title as I thought it wasn't very clear what we're talking about.

I meant more people can use the same account, but not at the same time. For example one person has time to update the threads on friday, another on saturday, another on sunday, etc.

Thats great! I really had no idea what to name this thread :D

Thinking aloud, and glancing at the vBulletin website it looks like the the gubbins behind the database is MySQL and PHP.
Possibly an additional question with which to consult the oracle, or a vBulletin consultant, is ...
“Can a database be copied from one member to another member,
(all permissions from those members being granted)?”
For example from fortuni to a new fictitious member, to avoid re-creating the database, and the inherent dangers of introducing errors?

Sorry for taking so long to reply. Been looking into the 'transfer to fictitious member' and it's feasible if tricky. Hopefully we'll get something sorted out soon as, yes, it would save a load of grief down the line.

Thank you Nickie. :thumb:
In my previous post I omitted to thank both you and Samantha1 for work going on behind the scenes in relation to those threads and databases. So thank you both!
If fortuni is currently unable to update his meticulous database work, possibly he might be agreeable to exporting the databases for import elsewhere (as suggested, to a communal account shared by at least 2 existing members so it can be handed on when an account holder steps down. Access could also be shared with fortuni, in anticipation of a return).
Given that the Thief community is based around an engine graciously released by its creators, the act of letting-go would seem in character, perhaps leading to guidelines for when legacy databases are created?
It’s a long time since I dabbled with MySQL and PHP and the servers are gone, along with the brain cells, but in theory export/import ... :(
