I'm new to the world of soft synths. I have a Roland Studio capture and a MacBook Pro with Logic. I want to add a vst overdub by outputting to a guitar amp and then capturing the amplified signal via mic back into logic. I'd also be using a midi keyboard to trigger play the vst.
Is this possible to do without significant latency? Or is there is some hardware I could get to combat / minimize the latency issue.

Did you give it a shot?
If the latency is too bad, it wouldn't be difficult to just pre-record the midi data, and then later play it through the amp. When you record it back, just shuffle the sample along to the left to get rid of the latency in the mix.

Any good DAW worth its bits will automatically adjust for latency, As you record the wave form will look out of sync because of it, then will shift into place when you hit stop. I'm not a Logic user, but it's one of the best ones, and it should account for the delay.

Most DAWs should have some form of latency compensation that you can enable. That being said, as long as you're not playing back the guitar amped signal with the original, the tiny amount of latency probably won't be noticeable. I do this all the time with an outboard compressor, running tracks through it and back into my DAW, and as I long as I only use the wet signal coming in, I never need to compensate for latency.
