I'd snatch up VR in a heart beat if they could get Thief and Stalker to work with it. That said It seems like 99% of the hype of how this will transform FPS - misleading?
That said, Mech games have a static frame of reference. I'd drop a grand for a Mechwarrior VR game.

It's pretty old, but...

Basically my brain doesn't merge the images from my eyes - it tends to ignore one or the other. I'm often not even aware of it; I suspect that's due to me dealing with it for so long. I'll give it a shot, of course. Who knows - it might even work!
It might even be a way to (
http://www.seevividly.com/) correct the condition. Inspired by the work of (
http://www.stereosue.com/) Sue Barry it's something that I'm interested in exploring - particularly as I have the same issue myself.

Workarounds for getting Thief and Stalker working with it does exist, but in my experience games that do not have
native VR support have been disappointing. Definitely don't buy a VR headset hoping to mainly play games not designed for it, you'll be disappointed.
Mech games on the other hand! Check out (
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tD546ZkUmo) Vox Machinae! The demo for Oculus Rift DK2 is one of the most satisfying (and least nasuea inducing) action games I've played with the Rift. The full version is still in development, but this one will be a real killer app I think.

THAT SAID, when Nintendo brought the Wii with it's motion controls out. Everyone was saying zomg this is the direction of gaming.
Who said what now? I mostly remember people saying it looked a fun gimmick for a few types of game, and mostly impractical for everything else.

While I'm looking forward to using VorpX to check out games in VR that weren't designed for it, it's really mainly because I want to experience those game worlds in VR. I don't necessarily want to *play* Alien: Isolation in VR, at least not for longer than an hour or so, but I want to explore the Sevastopol; I want to roam around Victorian England and walk from one end of Pripyat to the other. I expect that for that kind of thing the shortcomings of existing VR workarounds won't be as severe. Then again, I've read of people playing Half-Life 2 *repeatedly* on Oculus Rift, so YMMV.
I do think, though, that at the very least first-person games in Virtual Reality will need to decouple the direction you look in from the direction you move in, so you can actually look around while moving.

If you're interested in a Thief like game in VR, some people got The Dark Mod working pretty well and have ironed out most of the kinks, and even the ones left are super easy fixes if someone sat down to do it (like replacing the skybox texture for some maps & pulling the bottom GUI up towards the center some). The reports coming in about how it feels in-game are pretty glowing too, so that's good to hear.
Somebody put up a video here:

Okay, my excitement has just doubled... This is just speculation on my part, but from what I've heard about the difficulties of making FPSes playable and enjoyable in VR, I would very much expect that a slower, more methodical game (like Thief, and therefore like The Dark Mod) would be much less of a problem than one where movement is fast and changes direction quickly. Another reason not to let yourself be caught in a stealth game, if the ensuing chase would make you vomit...
