I know we've got an Oculus Rift thread, as well as a Vive thread - but I'm wondering how people here feel about the Coming of VR in general. Are you looking forward to it? Are you planning to get one of the upcoming headsets? What games or experiences are you looking forward to most? Or are you a VR sceptic?
I think that I'll probably get an Oculus Rift, although it also depends on the reviews this and the Vive get. I won't be able to get either until summer, most likely; at least OR preorders aren't available yet for Switzerland (because it's not like Switzerland is one of the wealthiest countries in the world and therefore a good audience for high-price consumer goods...). My reason for OR as opposed to Vive is that Oculus has been working on this for longer, they've steadily improved their Developer Kits, and there's already a community of users working towards getting all sorts of games Rift-compatible (primarily using VorpX). In addition, the Vive's main advantage (in my opinion) is that it's more geared towards being used standing up and moving around, which sounds cool to me but isn't an option for how I'd use it at home.
Right now, what I'm actually looking forward to most is checking out the game worlds I enjoy best in VR: Alien: Isolation's Sevastopol, GTA's Los Santos, Skyrim, the Mojave wasteland, Arma 2's Chernarus and Takistan, Dear Esther, all of which already work with the Oculus Rift DKs at least to some extent. I'm also very excited to try Elite: Dangerous in VR.

Personally I think that stuff is still too costly and underdeveloped. I'm also not sure this is what I want. My interest in gametypes I used to enjoy for years (scifi shooter/sandbox games) has been declining for a while. I haven't tried Oculus or Vive but it seems unlikely to me that a different output gadget will change that beyond the initial wow-factor.
I'm not sure yet what this might do for story telling games that I'm more interested in these days. Potentially a lot, but innovative content is usually rare on the cutting edge of the latest technical revolution.

I think it's overrated and wont go beyond the fad stage until there is a killer app that truly shows off the awesome possibilities that VR brings.
I'd love to see VR take off massively, but I've yet to see an exclusive game for it that was a MUST PLAY.
Give us that, and you shall have your VR generation.

I think the Vive will probably work as well for sitting-down games as the Rift. And yes, Oculus has a headstart when it comes to users making stuff for it and integrating it with existing games, but I don't think it'll take Vive too long to catch up once it's out. Plugins for Unity and UE4 are already (
http://www.htcvive.com/eu/develop_portal/) available for download, so a lot of the current indie games that support the Rift could quite easily implement Vive support as well.
I'm still no closer to figuring out which one I want to buy. Vive has some clear advantages(room-scale tracking, motion controllers bundled), but the reports of it being heavier are a bit troubling.

I'm actually hoping there'll be as little system exclusivity in PC-based VR as possible. For one thing, I think it increases the likelihood of this actually taking off (to some extent - I doubt it'll be anything other than niche for the first few years), for another it's likely to reduce those tiresome fanboy wars that call for a Ron Perlman voiceover.

Are those reports on Vive Pre or older ones? Keep in mind I haven't tried any, but I ran across this video the other day (

Misc pieces of info I've noticed (but I'm not sure if they're correct) that may be less obvious than things like resolution, FOV and stuff like that, but could be of interest when making a decision and the other factors are a tie
Rift is Windows only (for now at least)?
Rift needs more physical connectors than Vive?

I think the things I'd read were of the Vive Pre, yeah.
