However much this incident has been inflated and falsified by the anti-atom lobby, my heart still goes out to those 31 (IIRC) people who died as its result. However small that number may be, those guys died because they were working to protect everyone else. Thank you.

Plus hundreds to thousands of involuntary "cleaners" and thousands to tens of thousands of indirect long-term victims of the radioactive fallout. Consequences are still noticeable on youngest generations.
But I wanted to post this in the Stalker forum, since I have dedicated a thread to 20th anniversary in the CommChat just last year.
Admins, could you please move this ?

Well, I guess that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. must have renewed interest and reminded a lot of people about the Chernobyl accident. Speaking for myself, I now know a lot more about nuclear reactors, particularly of the RBMK type, than I used to. I was 13 years old when the accident took place, and I never really knew exactly what happened then. In the past weeks I've read a lot of stuff about it.

I wonder how are going the plans for construction of a new sarcophagus. The old one built in hurry is leaking, I think the plan is to build a large concrete dome around the whole power plant, but there aren't enough money for it so far, even with promises of international funding.

Move this back. This was a tragedy before it became a video game, admins.

Are you implying the game is a tragedy? :)

It sucks that this happened back in '86 and took human lives away (and still does), but one can't be sad about it forever. Now we are enjoying computer game based on the accident, and I think it is a good thing; kind of opens up my eyes about the history of the event. I read an article about the accident on the internet fx.

No, I'm actually quite liking the game. It just seems disrespectful to move a Chernobyl memorial thread just because a computer game has recently been made about it.
Besides, the thread doesn't belong here.
