I reached the shrine in the Puzzle Canal, and managed to give a silver longsword to the guy next to it, and recieved the 'gifts' from Lord Vivec which were being able to breathe underwater and being a little faster at swimming. I stopped playing for a while, and came back to the saved game, and now I don't have those powers. Is this normal? I'm pretty sure I saved it after completing the shrine part.

They should last exactly 24 in game hours. No more, no less. Though I think if you go back to it then you can get another 24 hours for free, though I'm not sure because you have to pay for the rest if you want a second 24 hours but I think with this one you might be able to get it for free.
