Vivec wont invite me in... whats next?

I am a level 60 Knight and finished the Almelexia quest and moved on to Vivec. I have been to the puzzle canal breathed the waters and given the deadra there the silver sword on the 3rd level of the canal. But Vivec still won't see me. Right now I'm just wandering around doing small, meaningless jobs. No one wants to hear that I've killed Almelexia either. Without revealing too much can someone help me get to the next point? What comes next? I am like a wandering Mudcrab plodding about...

Breathing the waters has nothing to do with the main quest. That only helps if you're doing the Pilgrimage of the 7 graces for the temple. If you want to talk meaningfully to Vivec you need to do the main quest.

Although if you're a level 60 you've probably done the main quest? (ie in Morrowind proper) in which case i've no idea what's going on.

You'ld think I would have finished the main quest, but I'm sure I haven't. I'm just rooting around. that's how I've gotten to level 60. I have been to bloodmoon and finished the main quest there is that what you are talking about? is there a way I can tell you what I've done and you can give me adivse on how to find out what the main quest is without too much spoiling or am I too far along and off track?

The main quest in the main game starts when you deliver the package to Casuis in Balmora. You spend time with him, then move on to a series of quests with the Ashlanders. It ends in the middle of Red Mountain. Sound familiar? If not, you probably haven't done the main quest.

yes i think I am in the middle of the main quest then. I haven't been to Dagoth Ur in the caves in the red mountain although people tell me about it when I talk to them and that he's evil. And I read in Vivecs palace the letters about Dagoth Ur and Red Mountain but have no idea what to do with this info. Any hints on where I can go next oir who to talk to?
I appreciate the help.

I'd look at the Quests section of your journal if I were you.
If there's any unfinished quests that say "Casius," "Blades," or "Ashlanders," do those quests. And, always check back with Casius in Balmora. He's your primary contact for the main quest.
