Just try it once more. There are a lot of old games that send DEP apeshit.
mmm I'd rather not. It took me six hours to re-setup the computer with all my programs and documents; the hassle's not worth it to play Thief 3. If I ever decide to, I'll probably just run it with the CD, since that seemed to work fine.

The new .exes didn't work. Got the DEP error again -- I tried to contact you, biker, but apparently you don't accept private messages or email..?
Sorry about that..
There hjas to be a way of fixing this as I had the exact same problem on my main pc. Ok, right I have a laptop with vista on that hasnt been played with so i should be able ot replicate the steps I took to get T3 working... give me a while to work on it..

Man, take your time. You've been more than helpful enough. And if you do come across a solution eventually, I'll be glad to hear it. Thanks again. :)

Problem solved. I discovered a file (no links ;) ) called t3_unprotected.rar
Must remove any traces of SecureROM or whatever the hell it is that's confusing DEP. So it works now.
I also learned that on my particular laptop (Dell M1530), disabling DEP is known to cause a blue-screen at boot. Must be a conflict with the built-in Hardware security.

Please excuse my language but, " f**king hardware security, wtf are dell doing putting shit like that in a computer when they knows its gonna f**k up, c**ts "
ok rant over, can you not disable the "security feature" in the bios..?

It's not Dell, it's Intel. It's a feature called Execute Disable Bit, and it apparently comes with all new Intel processors. I did try disabling it in the Bios, but I got the same boot problems as when I disabled DEP in Vista (ie, BSOD and the computer wouldn't boot). Fortunately I didnt' have to reformat this time -- I just reenabled it in the BIOS.
I think there's a particular problem with my laptop and disabling security, but it doesn't matter now. Thief 3 was the only program that didn't work, and it honestly can't hurt to have the extra security.

...for Vista are confusing me. I've played ThiefG/Thief2 for many years, and can now play Thief 2 again with the "uncheck one core processor of two" fix I just saw (haven't bothered with Thief for a long while since getting my new computer late last year). But after seeing this last thread (posts just preceding this one) where a user has actually experienced Vista system problems from the fix where he had to reinstall Vista....yikes! I don't even own a Vista CD...got my computer at Best Buy with Vista already loaded on it. Well, before I go any further, here's my setup:
Compaq Presario SR5350F
Intel Pentium Dual-Core E2160
2.0 gb RAM, plenty of hard drive space
Windows Vista Home Premium
ATI Radeon X1650 Sapphire Pro 512MB
Installing the ATI Radeon supposedly overrode the built-in Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 (instructions said to uninstall the old memory first, but how in the world am I supposed to do that!?), but to tell you the truth I haven't noticed any difference between old and new yet (or I haven't tried the right thing to prove it to me). I did install a card more powerful than the one already there, didn't I? ...anyhow...
I'm starting fresh with a new install of Thief Deadly Shadows, all set to go it claims, but the game won't even begin for me; I don't even know what the main menu looks like. It's like I've seen for at least one other (on an Eidos board): my mouse cursor changes to the spinning CD disc, but that's it. When I go into Task Manager my t3 is taking up half the CPU, and unchecking one core processor does nothing, and doing the compatibility change to XP for the executables has done nothing.
I'm hoping BikerDude can boil it down for me...pleez? :-) I suppose I'd have to at least start with the 1.1 Patch, right? But I won't try anything else until I've seen a reply here from whoever knows the scoop. In the meantime, happy to keep going with Thief 2, plenty of FM's I haven't tried there yet!
tia, Crowemagnon, Man!
PS FYI - I honestly don't know what "disabling Execute Disable Bit" means (as an example) or how to do it, but I'm a really good trained monkey (haha) and can follow the instructions for navigating thru menus, executing command line commands, editing the registry, etc well enough...

I had the exact same problem with Vista. The error message I kept getting was,
"This program must run with data execution prevention (DEP) enabled.
You cannot turn off DEP for this program."
Bollocks!!!
Well, I downloaded the original unprotected exe that was released by Ion Storm in the editor pack. It works fine now.

[EDIT] Stay away from the Razor1911 crack!

er yes, thats to be expected, DEP knows its a crack, so you have to turn off DEP.
I have recently found this website - (
http://www.winvistaclub.com/Ultimate_Windows_Tweaker.html).
its a very good tweaker for vista - but in this case it comes with a tick box to disable DEP.

ps, best to remove the razor info from your post....
