So I thought I would give Vista another whirl since SP1 came out and Microsoft promised better driver support.
I've got this really bad tearing and artifacts on my screen.
(

Current system:
Video: BFG 7800GS OC nvidia
CPU: P4 3.0 GHz
MB: Asus P4S800D-X
RAM: 2GB Corsair
Now the system works flawless on Win XP, and Linux varients. No graphic problems whatsoever.
But on Vista, it just looks like crap. I was reading about some people having their boards overclocked which caused problems with AGP driver with Vista, so I've got my board to stock conditions. It worked for a bit, then went back to the tearing and artifacts. (Sounds like a game of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.)
I've tried about 4 different video drivers, and they all do the same. I realize 7800 GS is on the way out with the P4, but it's a very viable system on XP. Vista just doesn't want to cooperate.

Hi Tbe
Right...why on God's green earth are you using Vista....only kidding:cheeky:
Vista uses the 3D function of thecard to render aero, so the card will use 3D mode all/some of the time(which heats up the card), so can you check the following for me (even if it sounds like Im teaching you to suck eggs)...
# Is the card a factory overclocked model..? or are you overclocking it..? as that corruption/tearing points toward this!
# Check the card isnt overheating, check for smooth airflow in your case, check the heat sink is on correctly etc
# reduce the clock speeds using riva tuner and see if that removes the tearing.
Come back here with your findings please...

I'm dual booting XP Pro and Vista.:cheeky:
Card is factory overclocked, and I leave it alone as far as clock speeds.
Card isn't overheating, as I have a Thermaltake Armor case and lots of fans.
I play S.T.A.L.K.E.R. on medium to high settings with dynamic lighting pretty frequently on XP, and for hours at a time, and I never get this tearing and artifacts. I've played almost anything else you can think of on XP, and I don't get anything like this, only on Vista.
I'll try to reduce the clock speeds to the 7800 GS normal factory settings, and report back to you.
edit-Underclocked the card to "stock" architecture settings, with no effect. Then I googled a bit more, and someone recommended the AGP driver for their motherboard to be installed. Vista had said it already installed the AGP driver. So I install a driver made for Windows 2000 and my motherboard, and now I don't get any of the weird effects on screen anymore!
Consider this case closed unless you hear back from me.

Ah that old chestnut, i assumed you had the latest/recommended motherboard chipset driver installed - I forgot you might still have vista's generic driver installed...
well diagnosed that man, our work here is done :cheeky:
