will it work if you install the missing c++ compiled libraries, that some independant games seem to need to be able to run in any windows environment.
I suppose someone could take a look in thief 3 to see which c++ runtime environments it needs to run, then workout which c++ libraries are needed to run it. Although it wont be me, my computer is so old that vista wont even install on mine.
eg like to make bioshock run a c++ library had to be installed, because the library isnt part of what microsoft would consider essential. same happened with crysis, and a few other mainstream games have had to install libraries that microsoft forgot.
Although the rumour is that vista will be replaced in 2009 with an operating system that wont run any games, just to force people into buying the xbox to play games, if it comes to that then I'll be getting a ps3.

Bumping this thread as it's the most detailed thread I can find about the problem. I got a hankering today to reinstall and replay Thief 3, after reading stuff about the Cradle all over again, and so I dug out my copy (one of the first games I got on DVD, which brings back memories) and installed it. Downloaded the patch, tried to run... and got this error.
I've tried various fixes ((
http://lungfishopolis.com/2009/02/getting-thief-deadly-shadows-to-run-in-vista/) like these, for instance) but nothing works.
Any help would be appreciated - I'd love to be able to play this game again.

Hell, I've gotten the game to "open" (no-cd exe, 1.1 patch, DEP disabled, UAC disabled, and "run as administartor") on my good-for-nothing inspiron 1525 with vista home, but it crashes whenever I start the first mission after the briefing (the pic of garret for a brief second of what would be the loading screen), and also when I click Input in the settings menu.
Dammit Eidos, do you even try to support your clientele?

Oh yeh, I have a batch file forcing the game into affinity with CPU 0, but I remember someone saying they had a fixed exe for both single processor and no cd support... wonder where I can get that...

DEP is in windows xp came in with service pack 2, I have mine set to windows only so it doesn't mess with any of my game files.

I was finally able to get TDS to run on my Vista pc after I installed TDS and then installed all of the T3 editor files. At that point I was able to set the affinity on T3.exe to 1.
I'm glad I installed it and replayed on my Vista pc, because the frame rate was never under 30, whereas on my old P4 XP pc frame rates were singe digits to about 15 at the best.
