It's not the gameplay I'm having problems with (yet). I said the problem is with the install. I've done nothing wrong with compatibility mode for setup, it's fairly straightforward. And I did nothing wrong with the driveletter:\setup.exe -lgntforce. The install splash screen actually displays, then disappears, and setup ends. Rather than say "you've done something wrong" which I have not, let's chalk this one up to problem is unknown for my system. Just because it worked for you on your system doesn't mean I did something wrong. But thanks anyway.
update: I tried rebooted and now the install is working. Now to get the game and Darkloader working as I weed through the various tips for that (crosses fingers)

...trial and error...:)

So I got the game installed. Then my adventure to get the game to play on Vista started. I have to change the game file's compatibility mode to WinXP instead of Win98, or else it crashes in any other mode. That was weird, since the setup file had to be the opposite. Then I encountered some weird things with the DDFix and the DarkWideScreen. I couldn't get them to play nice together, but I did finally get DDFix to work without widescreen.
Then the infamous movie problem occurred. Movies played fine when I first started the game. But the second time starting the game, they would not play. I tried all three movie fixes posted in the FAQ, none of them worked. So I guess I'll have to settle. I have to do the "no briefing" in the mission string file, or else it crashes.
But, I'm now playing fan missions again, after a 5 year break.

In Vista, you have to run thief.exe as an admin to see any movies. At least I and several others here do.

I always use my own pc as the administrator. That's not the issue.

There are different levels of admin in Vista. My user account is an admin too, but I still have to run Thief as admin to see the movies. Just try it.

It made no difference. As one of my previous post said, the movies did work when I first started the game after the install. After that, they stopped working.

Whoops, sorry I missed that detail. Maybe the Indeo codec went unregistered? Happens a lot.

I tried all the fixes in the troubleshooting FAQ to re-register, none fix it. Not a huge deal I guess. I just have to never die to prevent the death.avi. And when I complete the last objective, I'll just have to let it crash when it tries to play success.avi. And I need to avoid any FM that has a midlevel cutscene.

Too Much Coffee: Surely there is something you can do about the movies. If you have the codecs, and that isn't working, then you could just simply disable the movies: rename your movies folder to something else.
(assuming that your game crashes when it tries to load the success.avi and death.avi - renaming the folder should ignore these files and not crash the game. Well that's my hunch but I really don't know if that will fix it.)
