hello,
I'm back at this game after years :)
I've installed flawlessly the game, yet it crashes seconds after the .exe launch
I've already tried compatibility modes (XP,98), disabling visual themes and running as administrator as well :erg:
thanks for any help

one further information:
it looks like there are issues with cutscenes (movies): when there's one (game launch, missions launch), T2 stops responding (ctl alt del to return to desktop)

If you have dual-core processor you must know that Thief cannot play on dual-cores. There's already a thread about this. As soon as you start the game hit Alt-Ctrl-Del , right click Thief.exe in Processes tab, clcik affinity and uncheck one of the two CPU. If you dont have dual-core, I have no idea. Try looking for other theards.

(I'm sorry I forgot to mention that I was a coreDuo cursed  , yet that I already did the suggested tricks as well, before posting)
thank you all, taffers, I've made it, although in a strange way:
- I installed the Widescreen patch, with the same crashing results
- I installed over the DDfix patch: the main game UI started in a windowed mode (much smaller than my monitor); then the (new) game started with garbled colors and crashed to desktop after an instant
thence I uninstalled DDfix, I tried back to launch the game and ... The Metal Age is working perfectly now :), at the desired resolution, smoothly

You posted in the wrong forum by the way. This should be in the technical area.

If you're going to use the widescreen patch, you have to patch your thief2.exe first, and then apply ddfix afterwards. If you have a copy protected .exe for thief 2, ddfix will not work.
Sounds like you don't have cam.cfg set up properly for the resolution. If your game has garbled colors and crashes, you probably have it set for a resolution that isn't supported/cam.cfg has a different resolution than what you chose. Make sure that
after you set your resolution with the widescreen patch,
that you amend your cam.cfg with the new resolution you specified. Should work after that.
And if you re-apply ddfix, go back and make sure the resolution is correct in cam.cfg. Hope that helps.

I'm attempting to install Thief II with Vista 32 so I can play some FMs that I have missed out on from the past several years. When I run setup.exe (in win98 compatibility mode which is necessary), the installer starts briefly then quits before installing. The task manager does not show anything running for it. I've read the troubleshooting FAQ, but it's not resolving my issue. I tried running d:\setup.exe -lgntforce as the FAQ instructed. I've searched the forum, but found no resolutions. My pc has core 2 duo, if that matters.

concerning hard disk set up: driveletter:\setup.exe -lgntforce, that's the right option for installing TG,T2, everywhere (XP 32 SP2/Sp3, Vista 32/64 SP1): that must work (personally verified), otherwise you've done something wrong, maybe with the first attempt with w98 compatibility mode, I couldn't say
in case you're saying that gameplay is not starting, remember to alt-tab to desktop when you're at game main screen, then got to task manager to uncheck the affinity option in one processor from the process thief2.exe (nonetheless -as you can read in the upper posts - a few months ago I had gameplay issues that were solved ... by trial and error....good luck)
