Thief is a major step to virtual reality. What other consumer product comes closer to simulating reality than T/T2? All we need now is 3d goggles, artificial smell generator, and a full body sensation suit and we're there. Hopefully Thief 5, or 6 will be such an experience. Maybe they'll even remake TTDP into true virtual reality when technology is right. I can't wait!!!

Someone needs to make a 3D mouse.

I remember reading that they have, but it doesn't work very well. I'd give you a link, but it was a mail newsletter.
Maybe (

Sorry for the necro post, but I find it very odd and funny that someone named "Meta" (Meta03) made this thread over 20 years ago, considering 'Meta Quest VR' headsets are a big thing these days, lol! :)
That said, now that we are in 2022, is there a way to play Thief 1 or 2 in VR?

An artificial smell generator for Thief would be a TERRIBLE idea :laff:

Maybe I can shine some light on this
I actually have played ThiefGold in glorious 3D in VR on my Oculus development kit way back and it was amazingly cool!!!!!! Really awesome to be inside the game and walk around looking at these guards that looked so "real" you just wanna reach out and touch them. However the experience is not available to the public anymore. RIP great Thief VR in 3D!
Today you can only legally play Thief in VR without 3D, which is not very rewarding. It means buying a lisenced copy of VorpX and although the very talented guy who makes VorpX has tried his outmost to make the Thief games 3D he has not been able to do so 'till this day, well to my knowledge anywho. So you'll be having 360 but no stereoscopic.
Way back when VR was still an infant, in 2013, DDDTridef put out a test version of Tridef VR. It included a feature called Power3D and that feature did what VorpX could not/can not, it made games like Thief show up in glorious 3D in VR. So we who where lucky enough to get to play it then was truly in heaven for a while.
That moment of bliss was short lived. The company got very greedy when it then realized they had something unique on their hands.
1. they started by removing the Power3d feature from the app which was of course automatically updated, suddenly we could no longer play Thief in 3D. No other software could do this, then or now.
2. They then withdrew Tridef VR from the market all toghether, and nobody understood why. They had such a good product that was sure to be in demand so why stop offering it?
3. Turns out the reason behind it all they sold their soul to MSI. Suddenly after years of silence in 2017 MSI could announce that Tridef VR with Rift support and Vive support would be forever exclusive to MSI customers and only be available to download to people who could verify that they had bought a specific new MSI PC or very specific version of MSI motherboards. Nobody else...... if you bought a spanking new MSI graphics card you need not apply, because that is alone not enough to deem you worthy of the exclusive download of the mighty Tridef VR with Power3D and premade 3D profiles of over 900 games....
So you can not download and legally run Tridef VR if you are not the owner of some very specific versions of MSI hardware. The software will run a check and simply refuse to run on your computer.
So can you play Thief1 and 2 in VR in 2022? Not everyone in 3D, that's for sure.
You could always try VorpX but to me who can still vividly recall playing the game with 3D in VR, it is such a downgrade. But for the record, I have only tried the early beta version of Tridef VR with Power3D, I have no experience with the MSI exclusive version that came later. In the end the deal was not worth it for DDDTridef, the company's VR division went belly up shortly after.
Too bad none has the skill to make Thief into real VR, it's like one of the games that really deserves it. :)
