The problem with notifying the entire campus is that there's really no reliable way to let the entire student body know what's happening. I'm sure there's a radio station and maybe a TV station, but at 7:00AM - 9:00AM there's probably about 3 people tuned in. At University of Maryland, after a tornado killed two students a couple of years ago, they installed a fucking massive air-raid warning siren on the top of one of the largest buildings. Something like that is probably the only thing that could have gotten to the students in time. :(
I agree that it's questionable to not cancel classes after two students are killed on campus, but how could the police or University administration have known? A person walks into a dorm, kills two, then chills for about two hours before starting again? what the fuck

Not again...at least I don't live in Virginia anymore.
I ought to just leave this planet, alone, in my very own ship. Extremely unlikely, but if it happens, I'll never have to put up with this crap.
As for something more likely...well, I guess I'll have to hope that I don't run into any psycho gunmen, and if I do, either run the hell away or disarm that motherf***er at all costs if he's in melee range. If I'm going to go down, I'd at least want to do so fighting tooth and nail.
Yes, this must have been incredibly tragic for you, what with you having once lived in that state. Our condolences.

I know it sounds stupid, but I was nervous going to my night class today, even down here in Florida..I guess that's pretty sad. :erg:

No, HB, it doesn't sound stupid at all. I and many other mothers were very nervous about going to a McDonald's or BurgerKing with our kids after the last shooting at one of those places several years ago. I still get a little uneasy when I think about it. You just never know. And yes, it's very sad that one person can have such a terrible effect on so many.

Oh and StD, do you notice that this shooting spree has happened
less than a month after the release of STALKER, a game boasting ultra realistic weapon physics
made in Ukraine. I hear students are right in the target audience for these games as well so its really a clear cut case - the Ukrainians are utilising the evils of computer games to wreak
terror upon the american nation. Hell, they're probably even supplying nuclear materials to Iran and arms to Iraqi insurgents.
I'm not really sure why this is aimed at me?

In my opinion, the best approach to take if you're worried about these things is to consider the chances of being randomly shot compared to those of being killed in a traffic accident or drowning in a swimming pool or whatever else. I think the same can be applied to all this crap about The War Against Terror - how many people actually die as a result compared to how much money goes into stopping it? We'd all be better off if those taxes were spent on healthcare. Similarly, how much does the American public benefit by having easy access to guns compared to how many people die as a result?
I suppose if we're lucky they might manage to tighten up gun laws a little now because of this, though I doubt it will be enough to do much good.
And its aimed at you StD because you were placing bets as to what would be the scapegoat for all this, clearly it will be computer games and they'll somehow manage to drag terrorism into it so they can invade another country.

What happened today this was ridiculous. And I don't know what happened or what was going through this guy's mind," student Jason Piatt told CNN. "But I'm pretty outraged and I'll say on the record I'm pretty outraged that someone died in a shooting in a dorm at 7 o'clock in the morning and the first e-mail about it — no mention of locking down campus, no mention of canceling classes — they just mention that they're investigating a shooting two hours later at 9:22."
He added: "That's pretty ridiculous and meanwhile, while they're sending out that e-mail, 22 more people got killed."
Sorry for the stupid ass conspiracy shit on this one, but I'll include the source:

Is that some lightning fast Wikipedia vandalism up there or are people actually saying these things?
