So where is the line drawn, and is that line consistent with all this constitutional "right to bear arms" stuff? Automatic weapons? machineguns? 30mm autocannon? At what point do even the NRA types say "right yeah that's getting a bit silly"?
I saw one of (I think) Louie Theroux's shows a few years back on the subject of American gun culture. He visited this gun club that meets out in the middle of nowhere in the states, looked like desert to me. Anyway these fucking hill-billies had honest-to-god anti-aircraft canons, sniper rifles, the works.
The AA guns in particular were so huge that they were mounted on either side of a spherical cockpit in which the operator sat. It was pretty modern stuff too. Madness.

My wife used to carry a handgun because she worked nights in a bad part of Little Rock where there was a reasonable chance she'd be assaulted, raped, mugged, etc.
I'm not a gun nut, and we don't even have one anymore, but you bet your ass that if she'd blown some fucker's face off for trying to rape her, I'd have been very happy about it. In downtown LR, as in most big U.S. cities, the cops can't control the criminal element, and many people are forced to look out for themselves. It has fuck nothing to do with gun control philosophy, how things are in Canada, or the dumb ass NRA. It has to do with the fact that if I'm gasing my car at 2am and some guy starts waving a gun or his dick at me, I'm going to protect myself. That's the reality.

But until that Utopian fantasy comes true, there are a lot of people who would be helpless against the criminal element if they didn't have a lethal weapon to protect them. Because the law and the cops do a piss poor job of it most of the time. It's not ideal, or even good, but it's the nature of the communities in which some Americans live.

I fail to see the need for lethal force in self defence when the means are in place to incapacitate an assailant using tasers, mace or non-lethal ammunition. Whats more, a guy going on a killing spree with a taser, some pepper spray and a pistol with 80 or 100 rounds of plastic bullets is a lot less scary than a guy armed with weapons designed to kill.

Don't be silly. Owning a few hand guns will not help you against the US military.
Except that hardly anyone knows how to use a modern tank or an F16 or an air-craft carrier equiped with cruise missiles.
The average American who owns multiple guns has shotguns, rifles, and a handgun or two. I own a Chinese SKS 7.62 rifle. This is more powerful than an M-16A2 rifle, that the current military carries. Most hunters have rifles that can shoot extremely far. These arms can be a threat to any military in the world. Guerilla fighting, yes.
The same people that are in the military who know how to operate this equipment would ultimately be part of any revolution that the masses would be a part of. The first part of the oath of enlistment is to support and defend the Constitution of the United States. Some of the military would no doubt be divided.
Quote:
I, (NAME), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States
against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.
It's too late in America's history to ban and recall weapons. This won't happen in a long time. There are too many people who would never give them up. I won't give mine up, because it's a tool to support and defend the Constitution. I don't agree with all of the founding fathers views on starting America. Slavery, women with no rights, running the Native Americans off their land, nah! But this is history I cannot change.
This is directed at multiple people in this thread:
Why do you feel the need to verbally attack someone that supports their rights to bear arms and supports the founding views of this country? I don't attack your views. I may disagree with your argument, but I don't shoot you down for your view. I support everyone's view because that's a right guaranteed by all free societies in the world.

Non lethal weapons are not predictable enough to be an effective deterrent.
Do you really think a criminal is going to use non letheal weapons?

Well Google ads for this page is now showing ads for Elite Force Gear so y'know, welcome to an automated internet devoid of human sensitivity.

If lethal ammunition is not easily available then yes.
Come to think of it, just because they're a criminal doesn't mean they're a murderer. They could be a devout pacifist with a drugs conviction or whatever.

I'm totally with you, bro. I'll whip out my desert eagle (mark XIX) before that asshole even realizes what's happening, and plant a bullet right between his eyes while I fling myself over the car in slow motion. I can't wait to be in the newspapers.
But I'm sure you've got a lot more cock-wielding criminals over there, so I can see why you'd need a gun to (
