True AI by definition will be self-aware and very difficult, perhaps impossible to control.
*SLAP*No, "by definition" a true AI will be exactly two things:
1. Artificial
2. Intelligent

Ouch, not the ear! You hit me in the ear! :(
Ok, so "by the definition 90% of the population gives to the term A.I." then. Which is apparently called "strong AI" by the experts.

Perhaps other 'terms' might help here a bit - taken from the books of the Commonwealth Saga from Peter F. Hamilton - There, two forms of digital intelligences exist:
RI for Restricted Intelligence (which somewhat matches our current definition of AI, but the 'restricted' implies that the intelligence can not reach self awareness) and SI for Sentient Intelligence.
Trying to add some of my thoughts/arguments here to this thread only ends up in counter-arguments against myself. So, for now I hold it as raph did further up: Recognising a SI would be the same as recognising an alien that just popped out of its long-range scooter...
The question more interesting would be: which comes sooner?
Errm... YogSo - it could be that I know the origin, but I can not connect the quote. From where is it?

Right. Anyone interested in this subject should read "Emperor's New Mind" by Roger Penrose.

Maybe a more relevant quote:
B:"The designers reckoned that after a few years they might develop their own emotional responses. You know, hate, love, fear, anger, envy. So they built in a fail-safe device."
D:"Which is what?"
B:"Four year life span."
