Almost. How about
Serpentile Torc :p
Tannar on 4/3/2016 at 04:46
Nope. Sorry, but it is Serpentyle. Here is an excerpt from the text file in T1 (M7TORC.STR) which mentions the torc:
"The foolish old man who currently owns the Serpentyle Torc lives on a barren sidestreet west of the Cathedral Street drawbridge..."
And the actual objective text from the mission:
"A valuable item called the Serpentyle Torc is reputed to be somewhere in these ruins. Find it."
maybe, but in Dromed lootlist's as produced from 'Generate Report', so who right.....The Editor or someone who can't spell :cheeky:

Interesting. Well, a few comments. First, it's not uncommon for items to be called one thing in Dromed and something else in the mission. Second this clearly is not a mistake made by "someone who can't spell". The object is titled the "Serpentyle Torc" (with capitals). While the name is descriptive, they were clearly not misspelling "serpentile", but were instead creating a unique object name better suited to the Thief-verse. And lastly, my initial post was in response to this:

It clearly was not called the serpentile torc in Thief 1, only in Dromed. In Thief 1 it was called The Serpentyle Torc. I realize that this is splitting hairs, but I prefer to be accurate whenever possible.

Yeah I know, I noticed many years ago that there was confusion over the spelling, but I chose to spell this head dress item in my walkthrough lootlists as it is spelt in Dromed, but I'm not going to change them all over to the 'Y' spelling at this stage....rightly or wrongly!
btw, I also noticed the a number of authors spelt Serpentile/Serpentyle with a whole range of different odd spelling in their mission objectives, as they did with a number of other Thief nomenclatures.
Tannar on 4/3/2016 at 05:46
No, of course not. And I think most people probably write "serpentile" these days when referring to it anyway.

it was a good item in my view

That was made by a developer who was making the mission, which is probably someone other than the one who was responsible for the texts. That person clearly decided to spell it with a 'y' for all the player-facing texts. I checked the objnames.str file out of curiosity, and there is no actual name defined for it because it's a piece of loot, so the texts Tannar already cited, the book and goal texts, are the only definitive references for the intended spelling.
That being said, this is entirely pedantic and no one should really care.
