Half of me feels like there is nothing but awesomeness that can be done with this IP, it was so perfect; the other half of me feels like there's nothing that can be done with this IP except for them to fuck it up, it was so perfect.
Assuming this is a move to make anything at all, I sincerely hope the awesome side wins.

The most probable result is that they will fuck it up, but it will still have redeeming features. It's mostly a question of ratio. :D

Didn't EA renew the IP on System Shock, and then do nothing with it? I'm not sure this indicates a new game in development, and frankly if it is, it'll most likely be a totally new game with nothing in common with the old one beyond name, so no reason to get excited.

Oh goodie, another franchise to be ruined

I once thought it would be cool to have a remake. Then someone on here reminded me that the original is so good it doesn't need a remake. No, no it doesn't.

The only remake of this game possible is to make it the same, with newer graphics. So it's a bit of a waste fo time having the same game twice, WITH MORE SHINY™

Isn't that basically what Civilization has been for the last ever? I might not mind if they have a similar policy of not messing with the formula. Also: there was a kind of sequel, more like an extension, of the original AC already, which just added a few bits (biggest thing, more factions, including an alien faction) but kept the basic formula, and I thought it was good. Also the latest Civ was very mod friendly; which might be nice for AC. Also #3: AC is wonky on my poor laptop's video card; a new version can keep the formula without the kinks. This is all under the assumption they actually stick to keeping to the formula, though.

One sentiment I will never truly understand it hostility towards re-makes. If they fuck it up - who cares? We still have the original. Sure it'd be great to have an up to date version which does it just as well, but the fact that the original version is cocooned in so much nostalgia and sentiment, I'd go as far as to say that it is not possible to produce a new game which can feel as good. I'm all for the AC IP getting some new life. The obvious thing to fuck up with the be research. The AC research was very astutely compiled from extrapolations of (at the time) cutting edge scientific theory and research. I can't see a modern AAA game studio devoting the time to compiling an up to date database of near and medium future plausible technology advancements, which in my mind is what made the original so compelling.

While we're on the topic of AC, I was thinking of getting it on GoG but I'm wondering... what exactly is it, and how does it differ from Civilization? From looking at the screenshots on GoG, AC looks literally like "Civ in Space," up to and including the same resource model and very similar interface in places. And I mean, I love Civ, it's a brilliant game, but it kinda got "played out" for me (I figured out the mechanics and my strategy well enough that each playthrough feels exactly the same now).
So should I bother with AC, or just give it a pass and stick to the very rare and occasional (like once a year or two) replay of Civ if I feel like revisiting the gameplay?
