Hi everyone, I've been playing the 1st level of the original UW through Dosbox for a while now. It is completely stable, no problems, including sound, saving, restoring, et c. However, if I talk to the Green Goblin King Vernix, the game freezes reliably when I try to look at him again afterwards, and when I go to certain places, such as the bench behind the green goblin porticullis guard, and a passageway north and west of the green goblins. As long as I don't talk to him, the game does not freeze in those situations at all.
I wonder if this is a Windows XP/Dosbox problem, or just an old UW bug. Any thoughts?
Thanks for helping keep the memory of this classic alive.
I just started a new character, got to Vernix, and the problem is not occurring so far. Well, it could be the fact that I left an axe in the barter section when I ended dialogue with Bragit, or it could be a corrupted save game, or it could be the particular order in which I did things, or it could be a Windows XP/Dosbox issue. I hope I can make it the whole way through the game without an insurmountable technical problem. I got near the end (I think) back in 1992, but never finished it!

I haven't heard of that bug before nor experienced it during many replays over the years. I've always played the final version though. Are you playing the final version?

I'm playing the WCII/UWI combo CD. Since it was on CD, I thought it might be after the inventory patch, but I'm noticing a LOT of funky inventory issues in some cases, now.

The thing is, -- and you probably know this already -- if you apply the inventory patch to the final version it actually stuffs up the game.
I'm unsure of which version was shipped with WC1.

Actually, I didn't know this, but it wouldn't surprise me, given that we're dealing with primitive code. But this might help determine which version came with WC1: does the inventory bug involve duplicate items appearing floating in the air when you drop the originals on the ground, items disappearing from boxes when you put the boxes on the ground, or all items you're carrying disappearing after you save a game and then reload? Because that's what I'm experiencing. Thanks. I'll also look around here for descriptions of the symptoms...
Wait, it's WCII, not WC1. I also just read in another thread here that a guy got the inventory bug with the CD that came with WCII on the flip side (flip side?). Anyways, another person in another thread here said that CD versions have final builds, but perhaps not the one I have... I will use alt-f7 and compare my version to vf1.94S. It certainly sounds like I have the inventory bug, which would mean I don't have the final build, right?

Yep, that sounds like it.
If the problem persists though you would probably be better off just downloading the final version.

So I've installed the inventory bug patch, and I'm getting the "internal error problem with inventory list..." message or whatever with every restore, but I think it's part of the fix, actually. Why? Because the game used to be inventory bugged heavily, including on restores and saves, but now, it is rock solid on every restore, and generally. So I'm good with it. Thanks.
