I've been pondering this for a while now and have some important questions I wish to have answered.
1. If I deside to contract the disease, can I complete the main quest ?
2. From reading Vampires vol. 1, I understand that the Mages guild and the Imperials (including guards?) will leave me be. The Temple will hate me, and the rest of the world will feel the same. Am I right?

1. No you cannot. In fact I'd like to see you try to complete ANY quests as a vamp.
2. Everyone will hate you except for the mages, and some Telvanni.

But I believe that if you decide to be a vamp for a while and then get cured, you will be able to resume the main quest then.
I could be wrong, though.
And while you're a vamp, there are vamp quests, so you're not stuck with nothing to do.

An official plug-in I would have liked to have seen was the addition of more depth to the Vampire quests.

There is a cure for vampirism, coming from one of the Daedra Princes, curiously enough. So if you want to vamp out for a while, you can, and then get cured later and keep on with the main quest, as Ania suggested. Have a look at this page for info on all things vampire in Morrowind:

Actually, you CAN complete the Main Quest while being a Vampire. I don't want to spoil anything, but the strategy guide (Morrowind Prophecies) tell you how to do it. I'm sure you could find it on GameFAQs as well

Remember as a Vamp you are a very powerful player. Do not just kill everyone because some people you will need to speak to to complete the main quest. Don't let being a Vamp go to your head.
