I know there are a few older vampire threads but I thought it would be nicer to just have a new one. So I bought the game from steam, and after a bit of stuffing around with, it would seem there is a huge amount of customisation as far as character builds go.
Now I know a fair few people here really like this game, so what is the opinion on the best starting clan/clans? I have started as a Toreador, and am up to the first boss, the asian vampire guy, and he is kicking my ass. Would one of the more melee focused clans (Baja, Gangrel) be better for a newbie?

Malkavians are the most fun, plus their terror/sanity-based powers are quite powerful.
On my first playthrough as a Malkavian I found the game's story utterly coherent and straight-forward. People told me that one would have trouble choosing that clan out of the gate, but it totally wasn't the case. I reached that the conclusion that these individuals might be a bit thick.
* Playing Bloodlines stealthily is a good idea.
* The game is heavily balanced towards melee weapons, but investing a few points into ranged combat and keeping a few sniper rifles + machine guns on-hand as alternatives to swords is still a good idea from my experience. (Especially in the later levels when you're up against Hunters.)
* In a VtM game one of the first things you should do is max out Feed ASAP. For most players its the primary to replenish blood and is very useful killing trash mob class enemies, especially when playing stealthily.

Yeh I havent quite got the hang of stealth yet, I guess I keep trying to play it like Thief, also my skills are low, so that wouldnt help. Is it better to build up exp points and go for the big upgrades at the start, or just keep upping my combat skills?

If you don't want to play Malk go with Tremere. Malks are definitely the best clan though.
The unofficial patch(WHICH YOU SHOULD HAVE INSTALLED) nerfs the stealth somewhat, i.e. it's not possible to stealth the entire game just with one dot in it anymore. And if you're stealthy, there is no point in even touching Feed, as it has 100% chance of working on unaware enemies.
You won't really need combat skills unting after the second area in the game, I forgot what it was called - Santa Monica? So leave it until then.

Is that the wesp(?) patch, cos yeh I installed that one before I started playing. The game reminds of Deus Ex a hell of a lot for some reason, I can see myself doing more than one playthrough for sure.

I also just started playing it, with wesp's patch. I've played it before, as a Nosferatu and as a Tremere(I think), though I never finished the whole game in those earlier runs. Playing as a Malk now, it is fun. Also I'm finding combat easier than before. I just noticed I can feed on a guy who is currently attacking me, if I do it just after he swings and fails to connect. Never realized that before.

Your best best when playing for the first time is anyone other than a Malk or a Nosferatu, because they alter the game in fundamental ways.
I went with Toreador my first playthrough.

Wesp5's patch is terrific, but TBH I never bothered to try the "True patch", soley because its author is a childish, petty tool. Tessmage is always trying to start ad hominem fuelled flame wars, claiming that Wesp stole his work or some shit.
He also "ragequit" the internet for several months, including taking down his shitty site (dedicated to nudie skins for Oblivion, HL2, etc of all things, ROFL). Fair enough that its his site and he has the right to do what he wants with it, but it did seem to have an active forum with a lot of regulars. I view it as selfish dick move to discard all consideration for an entire sub-community. (They might've been mostly deviants and 14 year old boys, but they're still people with feelings dammit).

Oh my god, thank you. Everyone always says malk is a bad choice for first playthrough, and I disagreed with pretty much the same reason as yours. And even if you dont understand something, isn't it better this way, as it helps you identify with your character more than if you already had a clear idea of what is going on?
On my first playthrough I chose Malk because thats what the initial quiz told me to do. The odd/cool thing was, I didn't actually read the descriptions fully and wasn't aware how "crazy" my character was; I thought the weird dialog was a cheap gimmick of the clan and that's it. It wasnt until about halfway through the game when I started to realized some of the stuff Im seeing and hearing isnt actually there and that there may be something off with me... which was fucking awesome, as it totally reflected what a crazy-vampire-newblood would go through and feel like. I recall a chilling moment at the beginning in Santa Monica when I was watching TV in my room after the ship mission,
the reporter spends a good half minute describing the massacre, he ends it with "...the police know it was you." and I just kind of stood there dumbfounded thinking ("wait, did he just say that to me?"). I actually had a whole bunch of moments when I genuinely wasnt sure if something that happened was just the game, me being vampire, or me being messed up in the head. And after listening to what other vamps say about Malks I started to realize what was going on... kind of like a crazy person coming to terms with his own insanity and lerning to recognize it. Possibly one of the reasons VTMB quickly jumped into my "favorite game of all time" spot.

You hush. After my first Malk playthrough, it wasnt until my second normal playthrough that I realize all the intricacies of my craziness. Going back to my above point, I havent replayed as malk again because, much as I outlined, I know the initial experience cannot be replicated again, knowing how everything is supposed to play out, and what is and what isnt real.
so yea - GO MALK!

Yea not sure about Wesp patch but vanilla stealth is way overpowered. With 3 dots you can sneak around anyone as long as they havent previously detected you. With 6-7, you can pretty much bump into them, even on their patrol routes, and they wont notice you. Not even sure why you'd want to put more points into it after that lol.

Aye, lots of people say that actually, that VTM:B is more of DeusEx2 and DX:IW. Personally, I like VTMB more than DX :P
