I don't get this, I'm in Vahtacen and [SPOILER]in front of the Pillar. I use fire, frost, a sever magica scroll and everythings just dandy. When I use the Fortify magica scroll the whole pillar returns to normal. [/SPOILER]

Well if he was doing it on self it wouldn't do anything.
Usually it jolts you when you do something wrong, if it didn't jolt you it may just be an error so you might like to tcl through it. You have to do it in the right order, clockwise, starting on the one on your left, from the sound of it you are doing it in the right order so it could just be an error, try loading the autosave from when you entered the area or try going in and out.

I was doing it wrong; didn't realize you were supposed to go to each corner with each different spell :erm:
Having said that the first three worked fine from directly in front. Also I may have been using the fortify magic on me spell. I travelled all over Cyrodiil looking for the right one without realizing it was in a box next to the column.
Not my proudest moment.

You're not. As long as you actually hit the column with the spells in the correct order, it doesn't care where you're standing.
