Hey everyone, this is my first thread. I'm really upset that I can't find my computer with Windows 3.1 on it so here is my problem. How can I get UW 1 and 2 working on one of my computers? On one of my computers I have Windows 98 and the computer has 550 MB on one drive, 2 GB on another drive, a Pentium Processor and 32 MB of ram. My other computer has Windows ME and has 37 GB, a Pentium 3 Processor and 128 MB of ram. I have the Ultima Underworld disk that has both UW 1 and UW 2 on the same disk. I was able to install it on my computer with Windows 98 and it runs with sound with Underworld Adventures and DosBox ver .58 (once I fixed some things in the config). The only problem is it is basically impossible to play because it stutters soooooo much every second, I can‘t get past the opening. Is this because the .exe file is on the CD or what? SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME HOW I CAN MAKE IT WORK!! When I try to install it on my computer with Windows ME in dos like I usually would a message pops up when the command is typed in and says "****DOS ERROR****
Drive not ready on drive N
Make sure that drive latch is closed
Press any key to retry....."
Someone please help me out. What patches do I need? What do I download? What commands do I type? What do I have to fix? PLEASE HELP ME!!:(

AFAIK, Underworld Adventures is not at the stage where you can play through Underworld fully yet, although this may not be what you mean. You shouldn't need to use DosBox to play either Ultima Underworld or Ultima Underworld 2 in Windows 98 - in my experience both work fine just from a (fully maximised) dos window.
You don't say what sort of sound card you have, but I suspect this is the cause of your problem. I would try the following:
1. Copy the UW and / or UW2 directories from the CD-ROM to your hard drive.
2. Run the UINSTALL program and select no sound for either speech effects or music
3. Run Underworld.
This should at least allow you to start with no sound. Then, you can run UINSTALL again and select your type of soundcard (SoundBlaster Pro compatible?) and run UWSOUND to specify the legacy IRQ and I/O ports.
Let us know how you get on.

Note that you might need to do some config.sys and/or autoexec.bat tweaking to ensure you have enough of the infamous 640Kb free memory (especially with UW2, IIRC), but otherwise you can certainly run them in Win98. You will probably find you have issues with movement in some directions, unfortunately -- e.g. sideways movement might be very slow. This is a problem which has arisen with the fast CPUs of today, so you may want to experiment with utilities such as moslo and cpu killer to slow your machine down when you play.

Your advice helped...sort of. I copied all of the files off the CD and put it onto my C Drive and the game runs perfectly fine, no stuttering. The only problem is there is no sound at all, no sound effects or music. I looked and the computer says my sound card is Ad Lib Compatible (OPL2). I ran UINSTALL and selected Ad Lib for the sound card and ran the game. The game ran perfectly again but there was still no sound, even when I tried to turn it on in the game options. I also tried setting up the other sound card options in UINSTALL but it wouldn't let me select those. I'm so close, it almost runs perfectly, all I need is sound. PLEASE HELP!!!!

You perhaps didn't follow Al_B's instructions fully -- you need to run 'uwsound' to tell the game how to access your sound card.
These instruction are for Windows 98 SE and a 'SoundBlaster Live' sound card. The details may differ for other combinations (especially the location of the sound card settings if it is not from Creative!)
Stage 1
1) Open the Control Panel (e.g. Start Menu -> Settings -> Control Panel)
2) Select System
3) Click on the 'Device Manager' tab
4) Open 'Creative Miscellaneous Devices'
5) Select 'Creative SB16 Emulation'
6) Click on the 'Properties' button
7) Click on the 'Settings' tab
8) Make a note of the 'SB PORT', 'IRQ', and '8-bit DMA' values
Stage 2
9) Open a DOS window and cd to the UW directory
10) Run 'uwsound'
11) Work through the menu options, and enter the values from the control panel:
* For 'I/O Address' use the 'SB PORT' value
* For 'IRQ' use the 'IRQ' value (surprise)
* For 'DMA Channel' use the '8-bit DMA' value
12) The main menu should now say 'detected' for both sound and speech
13) Make sure you choose the 'Exit and Save' option to quit
14) Run 'uw' to play the game!
The process is identical for UW2 (just repeat the second stage in the UW2 directory) but again, I think that UW2 is more finicky about needing lots of that initial 640K of memory.
Let us know how you get on...

Everything was going fine until step four. I went to the Device Manager tab but there was nothing there called "Creative Miscellaneous Devices". But in the Device Manager it said I have a Ad Lib Compatible (OPL2). Even when I select the Ad Lib option in the installation the sounds and music in the game still don't work. When I run UWSound this message comes up:
"UW Sound
Configures underworld for non default soundcards
You do not currently have any sound devices installed
If you wish to add sound devices, run Install"
I also tried using VDMSound. Since I have Windows 98 I installed VCREDIST and win9x and then ran everything in VDMSound. The part that I am stuck on is that the directions I have tell me that after I run DOSDRV.BAT I have to "change directory to where the game is and run the game/application" I'm not totally sure what it means there so i copied the VDMSound folder to my UW folder of where I copied all the files off the CD and ran the installation of UW to. UW still wouldn't work with sound and I even reinstalled it selecting Sound Blaster and Sound Blaster Pro, but neither could get UW to run with sound. WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO???? Where did I go wrong? Someone please let me know how I can get UW to run with sound and music!!!

happy now? Quick way to do that is to bring up a command / msdos prompt and do the following:
C:\Windows> CD C:\UW (assuming this is where UnderWorld is installed)
C:\UW>attrib -r *.* /s
Much quicker than using explorer!

better - but did this trick work???

YOU GUYS ARE THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can now relive the days of when I was younger playing the greatest game ever made. Thank you to everyone that helped me out, I really appreciate it. The way I did it was through Explorer, but I just highlighted big bunches of the files together and changed them all from read-only to archive in groups. It took me about 2 minutes, for some reason the command in dos didn't work. Anyway I really appreciate the help. Thank you again everyone.
