Ok, I have a few questions related to UW3.
1. What might the story be for UW3? Any ideas?
2. In your opinion what would be the best engine that currently exists for UW3?
3. Would anyone be intrested in working on a fan-created UW3? <IMG SRC="devil.gif" border="0">
4. Based on any story ideas for UW3 what would be a good title?
Thanks for any replys.

Well, right now whe have Arx to be exited about. This is gonna be the new "UU3". The best engine would be the quake3 or the unreal engine i think.

The best existing engine (and I mean, one that was used for a game that has already been released) would be the Deus Ex engine. It looks great, runs great (now it does, used to have performance problems when it came out, but hardware is faster no-in-days. :P), and it has all the necessary functions for an RPG. Skills, "augmentations" (which would obviously be used as something else. Spells?), notes (everything said and read is kept in a log you can access at any time), an inventory, weapons w/ percentanges (like any good rpg, you need stats on weapons/items et cetera), items that can alter weapons, et cetera. Now, this means that any team could turn Deus Ex into a mideval rpg without new code. All they would have to do is make the levels, the models (Weapons, enemies, et cetera), change the augmentations, change the HUD art, and vuala. You have a mideval rpg. Sure, this seems like a lot, but an experienced team could pull this off in very little time. It's alot harder to take an existing engine with few features and code the necessary things on top of it than take an engine that has all the features you need, just edit them.
Infact, if I could team up with some artists and model-ers, I would love to try and make a nice medival TC for Deus Ex. (I would be doing the mapping, since that's about all I'm good at.).
And yes, contrary to what Jered might have you think, I'm a good mapper. I've been making maps since Doom (almost 5 years). But I doubt I'd have the time to do something like this. This is why I am fustrated. I am waiting for others to take advantage of the awesome Deus Ex engine (which is a modified version of the Unreal engine, just in case you didn't know). I would personally like to see a mideval mod, which would work SOOO well on the Deus Ex engine. But I see no such mods in progress. And Deus Ex has been out for a while now...I wish I could start it myself but with school starting again I won't have time. Infact, I wish some game dev takes the existing Deus Ex engine and makes a nice mideval rpg (or another Sshock, for that matter. :P) with it. I like the Deus Ex engine alot and it runs well, unlike the new engines I see on the horizon. I doubt any of those will run on my system....
But then again, once you have a good thing why let it go? :P The Deus Ex engine and the Dark engine should be the only two engines ever used. :P

There is no Dues Ex engine, Alchemist. That game uses the unreal engine.

Personally I'd like to use the unreal warfare engine, which is the one T3 is using. It has an amazing editor, so I hear, and fully customisable features which make it a very flexible choice for a game like the underworld series.

Yes, I have done Unreal-engine editing, quite a powerfull engine.
As for that medievil Unreal mod, there is the Crusader mod.

That's what I said, twisty. Deus uses a modified Unreal engine. Just as Half-Life uses a modified Quake engine. These modifications are still available in the sdk. Thus I call it the Deus engine.

Sorry, my mistake. :o

I'd like to wait and see how Thief 3 works. If they can get that game to looks as atmospheric as the other thief games, then I'll go for whatever engine that uses. If not, Unreal all the way (they just have to make sure the game works well with other video options other then glide, heck, I still have a lot of problems with Unreal engine games even today).
MustardCat on 26/8/2001 at 07:29
Well glide was the best to use at the time. I did read an article that the Unreal 2 is being made sepcificly for Direct3D. Sorry you VooDoo users. ;-)
Is Theif 3 using a new engine?
