There are sounds and music in the game. There pretty great, too. UW2 has better quality music and digital sounds. It's great hearing the clang of metal when striking with a weapon. Also, I think there was a kind of localized noise made by monsters. You could tell which direction they were in. I might be wrong, though. It's been a while.

That's strange, it means UW1 doesn't run as well as I thought on my computer. I wonder why because the intro music and speech play very clearly. But after that I don't get anything in the game.

That is strange. I've never had the sound work for the intro but not in the game. You're missing more than you think. Like, the music changes if a conflict starts even if you don't know about the monster nearby.

They do give you 3 general mantras in the manual to get you going - One for magic, one for combat, and one for skills like stealth and swimming. Later on you learn a specific mantra for one skill. So Mu Ahm will randomly boost casting and mana, later you will learn one for mana and a separate one for casting - which will increase each skill more than the general mantra.
This is just memory, so test it yourself...
Mu Ahm - Magic
Om Cah - Skills
Summ Ra - Combat

Mu Ahm also increases Lore. Btw you get these mantras from the Level 1 shrine, also.
Laurentiu and others: if you find the map of the lava pit, please tell me exactly where is it, okay ? Although I suppose you've got way to go until Level 7...

Lore - I found LORE as being one of my most desired attributes. I just HAD to know what that thing was, and I couldn't keep track once I had more than a few potions, scrolls, and wands. I wasn't sure if I trusted Shak on some of that stuff, and the LEAST he could have done was told me for free since I brought hima all my business!

Traded something ridiculously cheap (like a fish, or maybe a couple of coins) for perfect chainmail, perfect cowl, perfect gauntlets. I couldn't believe it. Never did it again though. Anybody else get a Shak charity deal?

Thanks for those three mantras, but now I have a critical question: how do I use them? Are they used like spells (I have to use the first letter of each word) or how?
Brad Schoonmaker on 6/7/2000 at 02:39
To use mantras, just use a shrine and type in a mantra when asked.
For a complete list of mantras, find a walktthrough.

But, of course, it's much more fun to find them throughout the game...
