Courtesy of PCGamer now I am playing this classic game. I have some questions however that are not answered in the enclosed walkthrough and there is no manual in any form on the PCGamer CD. So here are my questions, and maybe in time I'll add others:
1) An NPC told me that I can use a shrine to pray and improve my skills. I found a shrine on level 2, how do I pray at it?
2) I've seen that sleeping restores hit points, is there any other result of sleeping?
3) I can eat things and sometime they restore my health. When do I actually need to eat and what food restores health?
4) One thing that I don't like is that I don't have easy access to my stats. I learn from time to time that my experience has increased but how can I check my current status?
5) How do I increase my mana?
6) I have a list of spells in the walkthrough. Was this included in the original manual or was I supposed to learn about them in the game?
7) How do I use the Silver Sapling, I tried throwing it on the ground on several places but it didn't grow. Is it supposed to actually grow?
I'll probably come up with more as I advance through the game. I'm currently on level 2, I just found the blueprints that some nut lost. One thing I really like in this game and would like to see in others is the ability of combining items into more complex things. I've made a fishing pole and 2 torches so far.

"Use" the ankh and type a mantra. The mantras are learned at different points in the game.
2) I've seen that sleeping restores hit points, is there any other result of sleeping?
Restores mana.... and I guess if you played a REALLY long time without sleeping you'd need to sleep, but I've never gotten past "wide awake".
3) I can eat things and sometime they restore my health. When do I actually need to eat and what food restores health?
Not sure which food restores health, but you need to be full or close to get maximum hp and mana restoration while sleeping. If you starve yourself, sleeping actually decreases hit points I believe. To check, click on your compass thing at the bottom and it'll tell you your hunger and fatigue.
4) One thing that I don't like is that I don't have easy access to my stats. I learn from time to time that my experience has increased but how can I check my current status?
Click on that little chain-looking thing at the bottom of your inventory window.
5) How do I increase my mana?
Use a mantra, it's in the walkthrough if you don't want to wait and find it yourself.
6) I have a list of spells in the walkthrough. Was this included in the original manual or was I supposed to learn about them in the game?
They were in the documentation,I think... at least most of them.
Hope that helps... enjoy.

(2)Sleeping will also put you in touch with Garamon's ghost, sometimes. He will tell you things, albeit a little "cryptic". Be careful where you choose to sleep because the gameworld doesn't stop for you. Also, if you're poisoned, sleeping may cure you.
(3) Just for fun, eating mushrooms and drinking liquor may put you in a weird condition. Some items in System Shock 1 had similar side effects.
(7) The Silver Sapling is "planted" by using or left-clicking on it.
General help:
1. Use the map for taking notes. There are a seemingly infinite number of pages, but start after 'level 8' to make sure they last till the end.
2. When using the shrines, save the game prior and experiment with different 'mantras'. Unlike in UW2, there is no clear way of knowing in advance how many times you can advance at the shrine at any given time.
3. Invest in 'lore' skill. There are many specialty items in the game that appear as common until they are put into inventory. If your 'lore' is high enough, you'll see what is so special about them.
That's all I can come up with without spoilers.

Last time I played UW I didn't sleep at all. In the end, I was "fatigued", but this didn't seem to affect me.
I suppose that after a while you'll pass out - after all, you pass out after drinking a lot. (The connection is that the game allows "passing out". How silly isn't it.

I also got UW1 from the PC Gamer, but I'm having trouble running it, I've finally got it to detect sound when I run it under Windows 98, but when I double click on UW it freezes. so I'm left with the options of running it without sound, or not running it at all. I've also tried running it in MS-DOS mode, but then I get a message saying that there isn't enough low-memory to run it. Can anyone help me?

Well yeah, actually I'm pretty sure that there is someone who can help you - but, unfortunatelly, I have no idea who would that be...

Thanks for all the answers.
To Fafhrd:
I play from a boot disk to get sound to work. The following is my autoexec.bat:
@ECHO OFF
C:
PATH C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND
SET COMSPEC=C:\COMMAND.COM
SET SNDSCAPE=C:\WINDOWS
SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 T2
C:\SBPCI64\APINIT.COM
and this is the content of my config.sys:
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE ON
DOS=HIGH,UMB
FILES=30
BUFFERS=20
LASTDRIVE=Z
DEVICEHIGH=C:\MOUSE\MOUSE.SYS
Of course it is specific to my hardware. I have a SoundBlaster PCI64. Replace the last 3 lines of autoexec.bat with what you need to load your sound drivers.
Hope this helps.

Funny, I've been playing the PC Gamer version and have no problem with it in Win 98. Check older posts on this forum for tech help, though.

BTW Fafhrd, if you can run the game without sound you don't loose that much. I've heard the music and speech from the intro but in the game there doesn't seem to be sounds or music at all.
Chiller on 3/7/2000 at 21:41
Well, there should be music & sounds in the game... at least I have them...
