Hi Y'all,
Just started UW1 for the first time!
I'm on Level 4/5 as a 12th Level Druid (called Viktoria!) and I'm loving it!
Best Points:
- rune system for spells
- conversations (particularly the Green Goblin King!)
- magic items!
Slightly dodgy points:
- I'd like to have seen some more D&D type spells - a magic missile that never misses, a sleep spell, etc (loads more I could name)
- the Experience upgrade system (standing at an ankh and chanting is ok but i'd like to see a system whereby if you've spent more time doing certain things between levels (e.g. picking locks, or fighting or casting spells) then you advance in those areas that you have been using
- I'd like to have more than one spell readied at once (do they do this in UW2 cos I loaded it up the other day and it appeared to have two rune shelves but i ain't played it yet)
How are people finding ARX?
Could someone tell me the min specs for it? (I have a pretty souped up PII 266 - it played Deus Ex all the way through with almost no slowdowns)
Cheers,
flit

- If you want Magic Arrow to never miss, level up your Missile skill. That's all there is to it.
- You actually do advance in certain things as you fight enemies. But chanting will advance in lockpick and etc.. Chanting isn't so bad, and it forces you to hunt down a Mantra Shrine. I love it myself.
- Actually, no, that's not another Rune slot in UW2, it's a spell effect slot. But anyway.. It's to add to the challenge of things. What do you need more than one spell for at a time? I usually just had Heal as my active spell the whole time.
UW is a masterpiece, and the more you play the more you will love it. It's rough ends only make it better to me. ^_^

But, if you're addicted to UW and you are looking for a fix, by all means do play it. More specific opinions can be found in (
http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=66112)
this thread.
Arx' min specs are PIII 500Mhz, 64Mb + 3D-acceleration. (I played it on a 750Mhz, 768Mb, 32Mb-Rage-Pro, win98, no real problems).
However, to be able to see ARX in its full splendor, a heftier system (1GHz + a modern accelerator (one capable of hardware bumpmapping) is required.
But
do try out(http://www.3dgamers.com/dl/games/arx/arx_demo_english.zip.html) the demo first: one of its featured locations*,
the human outpost, really tests whether your system can handle Arx.
*one of the few places that was noticeably heavy on my system.

Cheers guys!
Sage, does missile skill affect Lightning Bolt aswell? That's my primary attack at the moment so it may be worth upgrading. And I agree about the rough edges - I much prefer Thief to Thief2 and System Shock to SS2.
Thanks for that link addink, I found Sledge's comments particularly useful. I think I'll get ARX while it's still about in the original edition - I may not be able to play it until I get a new machine but I don't mind that: I'm waiting until Thief3 when I'll get a souped-up machine.
Back to UW1 - I'm keeping Viktoria as my first player but I restarted the other day just to generate a few different characters. I got a Mage with 29 Intelligence and 15 Mana - starting Mana points are 58! I had to call him Raistlin ;)
