I was just wondering if there are any interesting cheat codes or hex edits for UW1 that actually work?

Aside from the code that gives you your map position (which I forget at the moment), I know of no cheats.
Hex, on the other hand, is a different case. The interesting thing is that the effect of a magic item is determined by a field in the item structure. Therefore you can set just about any spell to any item. For instance, using one of those character editors, I was able to make a Golden Ring of Fly.

Don't forget the granddaddy of UW 1 & 2 cheats - the debris bug exploit.
Scrolls and wands maintain their magical ability even when reduced to debris by fireball. However they do not delete themselves after they are used up - thus allowing for unlimited use.
This is especially useful in UW2, as many very powerful spell scrolls exist, there is no level / xp cap (or it is very very high) and thanks to the pits of carnage, no shortage of enemies to gain xp from slaughtering. Thus with some unreasonably powerful scrolls and a little patience, it's not hard to max out all of your stats and gain far more gold than the game world ever intended.
Mainly fun for your third playthough of course. I would not suggest doing this until you've beaten the game at least twice. ;)

The shrine code is "INSAHN", as for hex editing, heh, that was fun as hell in Ultima 4, I had an avatar w/ no class that looked like a snake, Geoffrey's class was a Fireball who looked like a child, and Dupre was fighting with Honor, just to name a few. Fighting with cities in that game was hellacious, especially Skara Brae, which was one of the strongest weapons ever, next to the infamous Twig.
